I've got a Sony also. Do you have your camera in the VCR mode?

Sorry if this is a simple answer, but I had the same question a while back.

Yes, make sure your in VCR mode,
also, while in print to tape mode
at the top, left side of screen click
(tranport) drop down to(print to tape)
then (record to device)

Hope this helps,

Everybody kind of struggles a little at first depending on camera, etc..

While you can print to tape from the timeline, that method can be more difficult depending on camera model etc.. Instead try rendering your project with a AVI NTSC template saving the file to your hard drive. Depending on how much you effect the source file, and the speed of your PC, the rendering can take anywhere from 3 to 1 to 10 to 1 or more.

Once done, open the SEPERATE applet called vidcap30.exe which should be in the Sonic Foundry folder you installed the application to. Click on File, locate the file you just made. Your camera should be on, the firewire cable plugged in and you should be in VCR mode. Most cameras show some indication they are connected like "DV IN" in the viewfinder or LCD panel.

If the capture and print to tape buttons are greyed out, Windows probably don't "see" your camera. Try removing and then reinserting the firewire cable into your camera. Depending on which version of Windows you are running you may or may not get some visual confirmation.

The buttons should no longer be grayed out. You should see the video you made on screen and in your camera viewfinder or LCD panel once your click print to tape and in a few seconds or less the transfer should begin.

Also, check your preference settings to make certain that you have 'Enable Device Control' turned on (there should be a check mark (or X or whatever) in the little box). Also, make certain that you have a cassette in the vidcam and that the record/save tab on the cassette is in position that allows recording.

You can start Vidcap30 from VV30 without locating the exe file in your directory. Just open the Media Pool, click on the camera icon. The box on the left is a sort of 'explorer' and file que area. Click on the file icon at the top of that box to search for and locate your avi file (I'm assuming you've already rendered the avi that you want to print to tape). Load it into the box, click on the icon near the lower/center of the screen to print (if you slowly roll your mouse over the icons, a pop-up description of their functio will let you know if you have the right icon for printing.

Good luck. Sorry if I've listed suggestions/troubleshooting pointers that are obvious/already investigated by you.

Hope this helps.

Don't give up. Vegas is so flexibile that it sometimes allows us to make settings that are contrary to the task at hand. I once inadvertently resized the box I described above enough that the print to tape icon disappeared from my screen. Days of posting to this board bemoaning the fact that my PTT icon had disappeared finally turned up the fact that the icon was hiding beneath that resized window.

I would consider myself fairly experienced at VV by now, yet, I still sometimes misplace/mis-set/goof-up something that stumps me for a spell before I can regain my senses. Usually it's something simple that I should have picked up right away.

The results that await you will offset this temporary frustration, be certain of that.

Good luck.

PA_MUC, please untoggle the "Cue Device" button. When in that mode, the preview/record buttons are disabled, since the transport is controlling the device, not the file playback.

I think I have a very similar problem -- did you ever figure this out???

I'm trying to print to a Sony digital video camera over an iLink (iEEE 1394) interface. I have no problems capturing the video, or controlling the camera from my host computer. However, I cannot successfully print my completed video projects back to the camera!

If I use the Video Capture programs "Print to Tape" feature, I get nothing at all showing on my Sony Camera. If I use the "Tools/Print Video to DV Tape" option in the main application, I get video showing up at the camera -- but it is masked by some kind of block-shaped interference pattern. Like you can see the video coming in behind this funky block-shaped mask. On playback, it looks the same. Some areas of the screen are fine, some are blocked out by this interference pattern.

What could this be? Help! How frustrating!!

PA_MUC,
To DEselect the "cue device" you should have your video capture window open.
Select OPTIONS on the toolbar and then open the PREFERENCES then go to GENERAL tab. The first selection on the list should be
"[ ]Enable DV Device Control"
make sure this is UNchecked, DEselected and otherwise NOT enabled for recording back to your camera.

I use Sony Digital8 also but don't have the model 730 specifically.
Try looking at your setup Menu on your Sony.
In the menu of your camera there should be something similar to a
"VTR SET" or something similar. There should be a feature called something like
"A/V->DV OUT" which can be turned ON or OFF. Try selecting OFF if you haven't already. My Sony was sold here in the USA but I understand that their products released in other parts of the world don't always offer all of the same features.
Is your Sony an "American"? Good luck and let me know if any of this helps.
