I can't install the demo even if I wanted to: .NET Framework

I thought I might try to see what CDM seems to see in the new version, but the installer won't let me install unless I go to Microsoft's webpage to download .NET Framework 1.1. Which, by the way, is already on my machine. I don't have internet access on my audio computer. So, if I answer no it bails on the installation. If I answer yes it tells me to restart the installer once it's done. When I restart the installer it goes through the whole same thing again.

Oh, well

You also need the SP1 update to .Net 1.1. The installation isn't very good about explaining that.

I didn't see any .NET SP1 on Microsoft's website. Just the download for 1.1.

I have to say I don't know why everyone is so paranoid about having Internet installed on their audio machine. I see people say "anyone serious about audio would never use their workstation to access the internet." This is laughable. I've owned CDM Studios for 7 years now and have had my email program open all day long while working all day long for those 7 years. In fact, I couldn't imagine not being able to access the M-W dictionary during a session (you have no idea how much clients like that) or look up a factoid, or get tech-support on an issue. Plus, people are so paranoid about security issues. I've never had a firewall nor have I had anti-virus software. Maybe I'm just careful about what sites I visit and what emails I open, but honestly, I feel like if someone wants my files, go for it. I don't care. Anything that matters is too big to take without my knowing it anyway.

I think people are too sensitive about this and I've never experienced a performance hit using the Internet when I need to while using Vegas or Sound Forge, etc. In fact, it's what I've always loved about this software - the fact that I CAN do other things simultaneously.

That's just my opinion. But it makes me laugh when people write that "any professional serious about audio would never connect their DAW to the Internet", since I am a professional and I am very serious about audio AND video. I guess the people who write that must use Pro Tools...

Well I don't know anything about being paranoid! I never said I didn't have it connected because it made me nervous. Believe me, it would make life much easier registering programs. I simply don't have internet availability at my studio (believe it or not).

And, like I said, I already have the .NET framework on my computer from ACID.

sorry H2000. It wasn't directed at you. I've just been wanting to write that for a while and your post made me think of it.

Strange that Vegas wn't install, though. Any way to uninstall and reinstall Net 1.1?

Actually I just found a link on the video forum which tells where to get SP1. It wasn't well linked on the MS .NET page. Perhaps that is what will make it work.

One very little known fact. If you ever replaced your boot drive, certain files necessarry for Net Framework to function (used only when updateing) may no longer work correctly. Certain files used only when Net Framework is reconfiguiring or uninstalling are not copied correctly by programs that install a new boot drive. FOr some stupid reason these REQUIRED files are kept my Microsoft in the %USER% temp directory. You may find yourself unable to successfully install, uninstall or update net framework.

Your only solution is to discover the agonizingly difficult process of manually removing Net Framework from your computer, or to do a fresh install of the OS including a fresh install of the latest edition of Net Framework.

My DAW is currently in that state. It is running Net Framework 1.1 pre latest framework SP update. I cannot uninstall or update the framework. Everything that does not depend upon the latest update still works.

My plan is to reinstall the OS soon. I need to get Ghost up and running so that this will be the absolute last time I do a fresh install of the OS.

Wait! Before you go though all that reinstalling the OS stuff. I ran into your problem as well. Trying to install the SP1 kept getting errors saying something like what you are saying about temp files in the user directory could not be found. But what I did is just run the full installer for .NET 1.1, then run the SP1 installer. This works fine.

If you are using windows update to try to install, it might be a problem. Go to this link to get the full .NET framework:

Would've been nice to have a little more instruction about this from Sony.
