I can't transfer my film to vegas

I have camcorder Canon GL2 (XM2). And Windows XP-Home. And Vegas 4 (d).

This is my first attempt to edit a film.

So my film is in the camcorder, I have a firewire from camera to computer. And in Vegas I then go to "file" and then "capture video". But then this text is coming:

"Please connect a device."

And that is all what happens.

There seems to be no life at all.

Must I have som drives for my camcorder in my computer? There were following a disk when I bought my camcorder, the name is "Digital Video Solution Disk", bur in the manual it seems only to be for stills, and not for films. But shall I anyway install that disk?

Any advice?

Hi,

Try these things, I encountered a similar problem with my JVC Mini-DV deck so I'll list everything I tried. First and formost (I know you've probably already done this) but check and make absolutely sure your firewire cable is securely attached to both your computer and your camcorder (and that the camcorder is on, I'm sure you already made sure of that but I like to leave nothing to chance). Once you've done that go "file" "capture video". Once that comes up go to the "preferences", I think this is under the "options" menu at the bottom, I'm not sure cause I'm on my home computer and Vegas is on my work system. Anyway it's there somewhere find the "preferences" on the main preferences tab make sure "device control" is unchecked. Oh, and does the GL2 have something you have to switch to send the video out the firewire? Hmmm, what else can I think of.....try that for now...I'll post more suggestions when I get to my work computer and have Vegas handy. Hope this helps.

Sincerely, Leviathan

Make sure the switch on top of the camera is set to "PLAY(VCR), not "CAMERA"

Lets back up and go backwards.

First - make sure the firewire cable is good. Do you have any other 1394 devices you can test it on? Do you have another cable you can try? Make sure the actual card in your PC is good - do you see it listed in the Windows device manager? If yes than go to the next part.

Second - if the cable and the card are good make sure it is plugged securly into the camera and your 1394 card. Now windows XP will automaticly dectect whatever is plugged into the card so when you turn the camera on a little pop up should appear saying a new 1394 device was found. if this does not happen than something is wrong. if WinXp does detect the device fine and you see the icon and everything loads fine driver wise than move on.

Third - load up Vegas. If you are loading up the capture portion than you may need to select the capture device from video menu. At the least you will see your camera listed as "miscrosoft DV camera and vcr", at the most it will name your camera. If you see it listed but nothing happens try the "Reconnect to current device" option. if you have the main VV editing portion open try this: under Options > Preferences > Video Device you should also have "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV" selected from the drop down. In the details window you should see "Device Connected" - if you do not, than obviously there is a problem.

Follow these steps to trouble shoot and let us know.

And FWIW - I have a Panisonic DV800 that will read in either Camera or VCR mode and I have a JVC SR-VS30 that loads up with no problems as well. I used to have a firewire drive that also loaded up. In all cases as soon as you turn the firewire device on it sends a signal Xp autodetects it.

I have a Canon Optra MC100. I have to have the camera connected and turned on in VCR mode before starting XP before XP will recognize the camera. It will then show up as a possible source device.
