I don't think this is V4's fault but you may know the solution

Hi everyone,
I have a new fast system (3.06 GHz w/ HT and 800 mhz bus speed P4, 1 GB memory etc) pretty much dedicated machine. V4 keeps temporarily locking up ("not responding") sometimes and if I don't give it about 30- 60 sec to catch it's breath before selecting something else (to see if it's okay) I get the MS error wanting to "report" the error. I suspected bad ram but removed a stick at a time to test but still no luck. Can you think of what else it could be? BTW, task manager shows like 1 % usage of CPU usage while V4 tries to stabilize again.
Thanks in advance guys,
Randy

What motherboard and video card are you using? I recently upgraded my video card to Nvida and it constantly locked up my machine. Exchanged it for a readon9100 and all is well again. I think it has to do with chipsets on video cards that don't agree with your motherboards AGP drivers or chipsets.

I think I know what you're saying zcus; the guy that put this together for me told me my old dual video card would not work (due to the voltage as I recall) with the new Intel D875PBZ mobo, so I got a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440. What do you think?
Thanks,
Randy

Make sureyou have the lastest AGP drivers for your MB too. Sometimes out of date AGP drivers can be a problem. I had that once.

Your old card must of been an AGP 1x card. The new AGP 8x doesn't support 1x anymore (the voltage).

Oh double check the video drivers and the DirectX version. If you're using the wrong drivers with the wrong DirectX, that could be a problem too.

Thanks guys, there was a brand new driver on the NVIDIA website. It is now installed and I'm putting it to the test....thanks again, I'd have never thought about a video driver...especially since I just recently bought it. I'm sure I'll be back to bug you some more though if it ain't the problem : )
Thanks again,
Randy

BTW, in case you're feeling especially helpful today, I posted a recompression problem over at the DVDA forum : : ))

Did you install everything from scratch or did he clone the old configuration?
I would recommend installing EVERYTHING from scratch.

Hey John,
I took the newly purchased opened boxes of components ( I considered putting it together myself but woosed out) to this guy along with an old HD of which I think he reformatted but just left a message for him to contact me and let me know either way. If not, would you suggest I reformat?

Thanks again,
Randy

I have the same MX440 video card and have been using it with Vegas for 6 months, no crashes (although Vegas doesn't like my M-audio card...). Good luck with your new driver and test.

Kevin.

That Intel board also has a flock of bios updates. Are you in hyperthreading mode and are you using the SATA raid drive setup? What OS?

Thanks Kevin,

Do you have the same problem as I described? I do have a Delta 1010 (M-audio card)

Thanks JJ,

Randy,
Yes I would suggest reformatting and installing from scratch if your friend hasn't already done so.
Check the FAQ at each mfg. website for each of the main components for issues.

My video card is sharing an IRQ, should I assign it it's own IRQ in the BIOS?
Thanks,
Randy

Does it only happen with Vegas? Do you have any other lockups? Does your machine have antivirus working?

There have been a couple of viruses recently where you don't have to do anything like click on an email attachment to affect you. It spans for a recently discovered vulnerability on Windows' port and it if your port has that number you can get hit. If you only see the problem in Vegas or other places where the motherboard has to move a lot of data, it's probably not a virus. But if starts happening in Word...

Hey Buster,
It's a V4 dedicated machine, so yes, it only happens in V4. I have no anti-virus on it but I only go onloine for updates.
Thanks again,
Randy
