I feel like I've been ripped off!!! (note: Firmware update fixed this)

I made sure the DVD burner I was planning to purchase was supported by DVDA before I bought it. So I go to make my first DVD...Nothing special just a couple subs and some small video clips...just a test run. What do I find when it is time to burn my DVD? Either my burner isn't listed at all or I get an "An IOCTL call has failed" error right when it is supposed to start burning. Come on...this is rediculous. Is this the beta test or the release? I guess I'll wait till after the first patch to call and ask for my money back.

I had the same problems with my Sony burner and "RW" disks, now I don't know how I fixed it but now the burner & DVD-A works like a champ. A SoFo rep might reply to
your problem. Just work with them. By the way, did you upgrade the firmware to
".g" from sony for the DVD burner? This may help. Also you might try and uninstall
DVD-A and re-installing it. As a matter of fact, while I'm typing this I think that
is the way I ended up fixing the problem?

Good Luck and keep trying, IT WILL WORK!!!!!

I'll give both of those a try, thanks

I have the same problem. And not only that, if I save the compilation on a hard disk and then try burning it with Nero then I also get an error. "DVD-Video files reallocation failed" Apparently Nero checks the IFO files for error and refuses to burn the DVD if it finds some. There is definetely something wrong with DVDA and I hope SF will fi it soon.

I don't believe DVDA allows you to export and burn with another program. I'm trying to lacate that firmware upgrade. hopefully that will help.

Beatnik...Where did you locate the firmaware upgrade? I'm having trouble finding it on Sony's site.

You can burn the prepared VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories using nero or RecordMax.

Hey Ratheon here is the Sony Site for the firmware update

http://sony.storagesupport.com/freeupgrade/

I had to go to google search in order to find it. Sony website sucks when it comes to navigating it!

Did you try to uninstall and reinstall?

DO NOT upgrade the firmware if you have a DRU 500AX 2.0C, this is correct for this drive, this drive is NOT a DRU 500A that all the firmware upgrades apply to. I have the DRU500AX and have had no problems with DVDA, my only complaint is its features etc that I have posted before (navigation, text quality etc). I have burned DVD+RW,-R,+R,-RW with DVDA, no problems what so ever. I use Win XP Pro SP1, DVD drive has been a master and slave on my 2nd IDE chanel, running in UDMA mode 2 as detected by Win XP, I have changed nothing. I have used DVD Complete and Ulead DVD MF2 with no problems. so look else where for you problems. I'm using a Leadtek K7NCR18D Pro M/b, Athlon 2400+XP CPU and 1 Gig of DDR333RAM, also, an 80G and 120G drive.

You people really have to get with it and read properly, the DRU500A is NOT the DRU500AX, hence the different firmware and code. They are very similar, but are different drives in the timeline, the AX came after the A.

Sony's definitely a little "difficult" with their model numbering and getting a story straight as to the differences between the A and AX. The most reliable information indicates that there are no physical/engineering differences between these drives. However, since they probably did change the EPROM to identify itself differenly between the AX and A's, I would not risk a $350 paperweight by failing to heed the warning about trying firmware upgrades for the A on the AX. Then again, why would one want to do the firmware upload on the AX when the most current A firmware (g) is at the same level as AX when shipped?

I found the firmware update and read about it bieng only for the A so I didn't try to install it. I find it hard to believe that my problem is with anything other than DVDA. I can burn with any other program I have which includes a 3 year old audio cd making program that isn't supposed to support DVD burners at all...which doesn't make sense. If I leave no DVD in the drive then my drive shows up in DVDA. If I have a DVD in the drive then my drive doesn't even show up. After inserting a DVD when performing the first "trick" I get the error which I cannot recall at this moment but is in one of my previous posts. I wouldn't be upset if I wasn't lead to believe my drive was supported. They say they support the DRU-500. I might be the stupid one here but I assumed that meant the 500A and the 500AX. I would love to just be able to burn some DVD's so I can learn what all this program can do. I have always liked SOFO products so I'm sure I will like this one once I am able to use it.

Well here is something I haven't seen here yet.
I must apologize to SOFO for blasting them on my drive support issue! It had nothing to do with DVDA but with the firmware of my Sony DRU-500AX. I spoke to a gentleman at SOFO support and he guided me to the website at Sony that had my firmware upgrade. By the way Sony's website sucks for trying to find stuff like this. He also stayed on the line and walked me through the install process which included deleting some of the apps that came with the drive. I would have missed the deleting the apps step. He made sure everything worked ok and we parted ways. My hats off to SOFO support. Thank you!

"An IOCTL call has failed" error

If you are experiencing this error message just like I have give this a try you may find it may solve the problem as it did for me.

If you installed the Veritas software for DVD (drag and drop feature) right click on the DVD icon in windows explorer with a dvd in the drive. Select properties and go to the heading DLA uncheck the box with heading (Enable DLA) then click on apply and okay. It some cases you may have to do this twice in a row for it to work don't ask me why. Hope this helps.
