I have helped others...now I need it

I have a very annoying problem wherein on my Vista machine, everytime I try and open a video file, I get a quick message from the Windows Installer stating it is "Preparing to install" for a split second...and then goes away.

The problem happens for every single file that I include on the timeline, for instance, as well.

I run registry mechanic with a deep scan and repaired everything to no avail.

I have run the microsoft windows installer cleanup tool and it is still happening.

I have no clue what else to check, so I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out.

It seemed to have really manifested itself after I installed a Pegasus Imaging MJPEG decoder that virtual watermarked every single mpeg file on the machine. I uninstalled it and that is the point at which I believe the problem manifested itself.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

I'm not saying I can help -- but you have no system specs in your profile.
It would help to have the system spec --- Vista 32 bit? Vegas 8.?

Can you do a system restore BEFORE the point you installed the Pegasus?
That's a good place to start.

I had a similar problem on an XP machine - it would open up an installer for a Macromedia program. Strangely, I had had that program on my hard disk for months without a hitch - who knows why it suddenly started misbehaving. Anyway, I solved the problem by uninstalling that program.

Does it ever stay open long enough so that you can see what program it's wanting to install?

Does Vista have a "file type association" edit like XP does? If so, look for *.mpg and see if this Pegasus is associated with all mpg files, or there is no current file association for .mpg If it is, then associate it with Windows Media Player instead?

Everyone thanks for your responses. This is how I fixed it.

First, mpg, avi, mpeg types were all associated with Windows Media Player, not Pegasus, so that recommendation checked out to not be the case. Thank you though.

I had run the windows installer cleanup tool. As I had said that didn't fix the problem. I actually ran msizap and it through an error with the G! command line switch. I looked in the application log in the event viewer. I noticed a continual windows installer message error. It was saying something about couldn't find a long GUID in the registry pertaining to MJPEG3.0. I searched the whole registry and deleted anything I found with that guid. Ran regfix and it still occurred. Looked for anything with MJPEG3.0 in the registry and deleted any of those entries. Ran regfix. After that point the problem did not occur again. Somehow at various points in the registry I still had hooks to MJPEG3.0 and Pegasus I suppose when playing a media file. After removing all of those I no longer got the message before a media file would play. Hope this helps others who may have the same problem. It was very annoying!
