I just got a Sony catalog in the mail today, and one of the new offerings is New! Vegas Movie Studio+DVD. The screen shot looks the same as Movie Studio 3, but there is a description column where they asterisk the features that are NEW to this version. At least, that is what I think the asterisk means. Here are the features that are asterisked:

1. Includes DVD Architect Studio software for DVD authoring

2. Batch capture with automatic scene detection

3. Flash (.swf) format import

4. Apply over 180 customizable 2D/3D transitions

5. Clean up music using audio restoration tools

6. Design DVDs using DVD Architect software with over 40 included themes, motion menus. buttons and links

7. Publish creations to ACIDplanet.com

If these features are already included in ScreenBlast Movie Studio 3.0, then I am wrong. I have Movie Studio 3.0 and these seem like new features to me.

There are many more features listed - I think they are all the same as 3.0.

If there is a way to attach an image here, I could scan the Sony catalog page and let you see the whole thing.

To me, it looks SUPER! It gives the MSRP at US $99.95. There is no update from Movie Studio 3.0 but I would sure think that would be coming.

Just thought I would pass this on since there is so much confusion about this. The catalog says for MORE info go to www.sony.com/mediasoftware but I could NOT find anything about THIS product there.

Interesting that it was in the catalog.

I was just in CompUSA today and they had a bunch of the new version out for sale. I took a long and envious look at the box. They had them locked into plastic boxes, so no chance of my "accidentally" opening a box.

Based on what I could see on the box, here is what is new:

1) DVD Architect Studio 2.0. Note the "Studio" added to the name. No doubt some sort of scaled down version of the full-blown $200-plus DVD Architect. Based on the screen shot on the back of the box, it is very clear that it is indeed a Vegas/Movie Studio product, not some repackaging of MyDVD or some other company's product. Also based on the screen shot even the "limited" version will blow away MyDVD. (No surprise there.) The screen shot showed a nice customized menu layout.

2) "3d transitions" - At least as far as I know, there are not any of these in MovieStudio 3.0b. They sort of lumped this in with the overall description, so no way to know how many or

3) 1,001 sound effects - They used to ship a little media CD with Video Factory/Movie Studio, but I don't remember there being 1,001 sound effects. Maybe this is new, maybe not.

4) "Video clips, title cards, borders and music beds" - Again, they just list this generically, but I don't remember all of those being part of the media CD that came with past versions.

I think that the flash import and the batch capture with scene detection could rightly be said to be in MovieStudio 3.0. The audio restoration tools sound interesting, but they might be talking about the audio plugins currently available in MovieStudio 3.

Thanks for posting the scoop from the Sony catalog, interesting stuff!

Here's a link to the regular Vegas vs. Movie Studio chart:

Also, note on the right of the chart page there's a link to a chart to clarify what they've left out of DVD Architect:

The biggie is no AC-3 encoding in the Studio version, which would seem the obvious place to cut corners due to licensing cost. Not many others offer AC-3 at this price point, either.

Kudos to Sony for retaining the entirely reasonable $30 upgrade price.
