... I don't want to hear about 'aspect ratio', 1081i, H.265, secondary colour wheels, and a ton of new stuff coming down the line ever again ....no more film.... no more broadcast pieces .... no NTSC .... no more DVD projects (those are the worst)......I simply can't cope .... I'm doing computer projects only .... ... nice clean RGB, sweet square pixels and available in any size or shape you want .... it's all going that way .... total convergence of TV and computer ....streaming full quality major motion pictures on demand ... can't wait .... and Vegas puts it all together so deliciously by supporting some of the best web encoders around.... GO DIGITAL...!! ... GO WEB ....!! ..... GO VEGAS...!!

I do to. But whenever you play a video with a resolution different from the resolution of the playback device scaling will occur. And this scaling will also occur when you rescale a playback window in a computer monitor to any resolution different from the native video resolution.

So, scaling is scaling, it doesn't matter what the PAR or SAR is, only when monitor resolution=video resolution will no scaling occur. If you look at most of the HD monitor resolutions on the market today and the resolutions in the HD spec, you will see that it is not often that the "perfect match" will occur.

You are right in that any video format that uses non-square pixels will NEVER be able to be played without scaling since all HD monitors use square pixels, although I'm not sure if (any) HD CRT displays can scan non-square pixels.

It would be nice to simplify things but I think that creativity is a very demanding beast, and each artist will hopefully gravitate to the format that best expresses the creative vision. I'd hate to limit the video "toolbox" for the sake of organization or neatness if it would detract from the creativity of the project in any way. I think that is the "thing" that must be protected throughout the video process.

>> creativity is a very demanding beast <<

... how true .. some spend hours tweaking bit rates and messing endlessly with encoders and aspect ratios... the goal is to get your story or message across regardless of how the image is stretched on the screen ... an interesting and solidly told story transcends the media that conveys it ... a bad story will not be improved with a technically faultless presentation...

... ps ...SQUARE PIXELS RULE ....!!!
