I'M Confused...Top or Bottom Field??

fetch wrote on 6/26/2004, 7:14 AM
I'm converting some PAL footage to NTSC. The original footage is Bottom field interlaced.
When rendering to NTSC do I need to change the field order in the mainconcept template to Top Field or keep it the same as the original source?.

I'm assuming that, because TV's in America are NTSC Top field correct?

or have I just lost the plot..:(

Please help.

NTSC varies. DV video is normally upper field first. Other video can vary, for example, my MJPEG card captures lower field first.

Ah, I think you'll find both PAL and NTSC are lower field first, sure are according to the default templates in Vegas and every other reference I've seen. Of cause I could be wrong but then again if I am soemthing else must be screwy cause I'm not noticing anything wierd going on with my video and it sure does although in subtle ways if you get it wrong.

farss are you from US?, do you render bottom field first when creating your own DVD's
If so - that is what I will do

I'm in the US (Illinois) and I render everything lower field first.

If your source is bottom field first (DV) then render it to bottom field first MPEG-2 in Vegas. It doesn't matter if it's PAL or NTSC, don't change the field order in Vegas. So in your case: bff PAL to bff NTSC.

If you capture analog NTSC using some of the ATI cards, they reverse the field order.

Yes, like most analog (non-DV) capture cards, ATI Radeon cards capture upper field first. In that case you should render to upper field first MPEG-2 in Vegas. If you render tff to bff in Vegas your video becomes blurrier.

I capture all my footage through my canon XM2 which does a great job converting analogue footage to digital via IEEE.

I thankyou all for your replies
