I'm Switching to FCP

OK. I'm just kidding but now that I have your attention.....

I'm just back from SIGGRAPH in LA where I had a look at Discreet Combustion. Wanted to see how it stacks up against After Effects. I like Combustion a lot better. Much more intuitive interface and very capable.

Along the way I wandered past Apple (you couldn't miss them) and had a look at the Vegas Editor's dream display: a 30 inch LCD at 2560 x 1600 pixels.

About $4K with the high end graphics card needed to drive it. We need something like this for Vegas at about half that price. We may have a long wait.

Here's the Apple link: Apple Cinema Displays

No need to wait (except for the price....) Apple's tech specs say it will work on a Windows PC, too:

"Windows-based PCs with graphics card that supports DVI ports with full single link digital bandwidth and VESA DDC standard for plug and play setup."

One thing I find interesting, the video card that Jobs was saying you'd need to drive this baby is well ah, AGP and Intel just changed the game plan and made AGP obsolete. No doubt Apple will soon catch up, so all the Macolites will race out to buy this beautiful beast only to discover that the video card they need to run it will not fit into their G5, they'll have to upgrade to a G6. One way to keep sales figures looking good.
Client of mine bought an eMac two weeks ago and he was really excited as it came with iMovie and iDVD. Except it didn't come with a DVD burner, not to worry he thought just buy an external one but that doesn't work with iDVD and Apple wanted $900 to fit an internal DVD burner. Will they ever learn.

Bob.

A little birdie told me that larger LCD screens in the 20-36 inch range are just around the corner for the Windows market. Some are already out. Most should run at least 1280x1024 which should be OK for most.

I wil start looking at the larger screens when there are a few to compare, but only when they are at least 24 to 26" in 16"9, with VERY good contrast, none of this 400:1 stuff, and with at least 1920 by 1280 resolution. 36 inches seems to be a bit of desk top overkill.

I saw a nice one a few weeks ago, and lost the name and number of the blasted thing, that claimed that it had TRUE COLOR OUTPUT SUITABLE FOR VIDEO EDITORS. Comprable to a top flight Professional Studio Monitor, they clamied.

The price was high enough, too. Hope that starts to come down, soon. Since they don't have to have special phosphors, I hope they can get better colors across the board on ALL flat panel monitors.
