I must be the only one who didn't know

I do a regular TV show for some of the local cable systems. The live stuff is shot in HDV but some of the stuff I have to use comes in on SD DV. I edit in VP9e and have never had a problem mixing the HDV and SD on the timeline and rendering to widescreen DVD. All of a sudden this week, when I viewed the final DVD, the SD DV stuff was eaten up with the :jaggyies". Any vertical motion was so distorted as to be unwatchable. This has never happened on any show before so I started looking for what had changed. I figured it was a field order problem. My understanding is that Vegas changes everything to progressive, which is why it looks OK on the computer monitor. It then outputs the render at the project properties. Now, I know the HDV is UFF and the DV is LFF and that is the way it was in this project as in all the others I have done. I output to NTSC DVD widescreen LFF and it always looked fine before. So...after 3 hours, as a last resort, I brought an HDV clip and the DV clip into VP8 and rendered it the same as in VP9e. The DVD looked fine with NO jaggies. So, I opened 9 and 8 at the same time and started comparing settings. I noticed that in 9 on the project properties, there is a check box not available on VP8. The box says "Adjust source media to better match project or render settings". Sounds like a good box to check - right? Well, I UNCHECKED that box and - problem solved! I'm certain everyone else here knows this but it was a real eye opener for me. Sorry if I wasted your time.

Sorry about the typo in the title - couldn't change it

"My understanding is that Vegas changes everything to progressive"

Not true. Vegas conforms to project and preview settings while previewing, which could be progressive, LFF, or UFF depending on how you have it set. If your preview size is half the source size then you'll only see every other line which effectively shows you one field of an interlaced image. This may be why you think it's progressive during preview.

OK...so I misunderstood. But, that little check box still caused me a lot of grief!

I have the same problem with one project . All the sequences are progressive but a few with some hectic motion are rendering with jaggies. thanks for the heads up.

O yes just in case……apologies for any spelling and grammar errors
