I need a 'Make Movie' option like VF has!

I can't believe Vegas does not have this because VF does! (Unless I can't find it)

You almost have to open a project in VF to see what I mean.

If you have a project in VF that you want to render, you hit ->File->Make Movie. With Vegas, you hit ->File->Render As. But the options are much better in VF.

VF has 5 choices:
1.)Write your movie to a file on your disk.
2.)Print your movie to DV tape.
3.)Write your movie to Video CD or CD-ROM.
4.)Send your movie via E-mail.
5.)Create a web page with your movie.

So after you click say, option #1 in VF, you have the choices of how you want to render your project, much like Vegas does. But there is a nice area that will give you some info about the file you are about to create: Estimated Size (MB), Free space (on your HD), and Download time depending on your Format and Template.

There is also a 'Advanced Render' button, that looks exactly like VV 'Render As' template. Did SF eliminate this useful feature in Vegas?

If they did, I want to import my VV project to VF for the calculating features. Is that possible?

BTW, simonwim posted a question like this, and nlamartina actually wrote a program to figure out the calculations (nice job), but I'd like to have this in VV.

Thanks, Jon

Well...I aswered my own question about opening my project in VF. I saved my file as DV.avi, and opened it in VF.

That way I have all the calculations (in VF).

This feature is useful if say, you want to keep your file to a certian size for streaming.

Example: I want to render a 10 min event as .wmp for streaming video: I have (in VF) template choices of 56 Kbps video which is a 2.5 mb file, all the way up to 3 Mbps which is a 231 mb file. VF figured this out for me with the click of my mouse.

Is this not possible with Vegas?

Just my guess... the feature you speak of in Video Factory is more on the order of a wizard which I'm gussing isn't as appropriate in "professional" grade software like Vegas Video, whereas Video Factory clearly seems more targeted towards hobbists and for mainly home use, however many of us have upgraded to VV3. :-)

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind seeing such a hand holding feature, however I think maybe the reason for the absense is perhaps more towards marketing so not to offend those that fancy themselves "professionals".

Notice every once in a while how some "professionals" even howl over the name Vegas Video which leads me to wonder how professional some really are if they get up tight over such a trival thing as the name of the software they use. LOL!

in Vegas 3 go to Tools>Burn CD>burn Multimedia CD. You'll see the file size estimator, similar to the one found in VF.

I have a discription box, but not the file size estimator.

I have VV 3.0a, (Build 107).

Same here; no size estimate.

make a time selection in the timeline first

Thanks Chienworks, I was about to check myself in...

SonicEPM, that didn't do anything for me either.

A VF style wizard would be fine by me if there was a preferrence switch to turn it off. Because I know what I want and do not want to be limited by the choices of wizards I found the VF wizard to be a time waster for me and always went around it. Wizards that can be used or diabled though would bridge the gap. Since the SF engineers don't sleep at night anyway, maybe that can show up in Vegas 4.

I'm not so worried about the wizard, but the file size estimator would be nice. SF could just add a plug-in for this. I'd think it would be easy for them, and it should be free, since I already have this on my VF software.

SonicEPM, I'm pretty sure VV does not have this feature, do you agree?

Got it! I selected a loop region (in this case the entire project), then Tools -> Burn CD -> Multimedia CD. Voila, it's there. Perhaps this should be shown even without selection a region? If i uncheck "Render loop region only" the estimated size display disappears. I would think that it should still show, but calculate based on the entire project.

windows calculator is all you need. these might save you some time:
http://ben.orona.com/video/bandwidth.formulas.htm

my examples are loosely converting 750K to 750000 bps which is not correct but is close enough... the formulas themselves are correct.
Stiffler wrote on 5/8/2002, 9:59 PM
I found it too. Clicked on select loop region, boom, it showed up. The only thing missing is the Download time that VF has. I can use the formula cheesehole provided for the DL time.

The info boxes are only in the Multimedia section, not in the Render As area.

The boxes are so small, I hope SF would add this in VV4 as it is useful, yet unannoying.

Thanks all for your help, Jon
