I see another update coming - lost function in the wma/wmv functions

Spheris wrote on 9/4/2002, 3:11 PM
Looks like Service Pack 1 for XP unhooks the wmfplugin for Forge and Vegas - No properies show and the export bring out some strange non descript error about missing something and stops, doesn't crash the program but just doesn't export. Weirdly enough It took a mac person to discover it.

Our in-house audio developer is pulling his hair out, knows not a thing about using a support forum - so I'm going to help him out on this one - any suggestions for him? Any idea what would cause this?

Now maybe I can talk the boys upstairs into using quicktime and G-4's ~s~
Kidding, they'd never do it anyway :)

Did you come across this with the Beta of sp1?

WinXP ServicePack 1 will not be released until Monday September 9.

Spheris wrote on 9/4/2002, 6:56 PM
Service Pack ! was released to Gold Partners and OEMS September 3rd as far as I was told, the build is 1106 for the final shipping one on the 9th. The bug is genuine and apparently repeatable, as it was replicated on my G4 in Virtual PC.

I use Final Cut pro myself, but thought you might like to know

Spheris, we are investigating this issue. In the meantime could you try and re-run the installer and choose the repair option. Hopefully that will take care of the issue. Please post again and let us know how it went.

Thank You

Had our guy run the repair, tried the same on my G-4 in vpc

Same result, in the property tab for audio and video, no information for either audio or video tabs in the wma/wmv export, I'm guessing that's what's missing when the export stops. So who knows. The PC audio guys gone home for today. I'm in the office doing the rest of the project in final cut. So, I'll check back from time to time today, to see if you figured anything out.

Here's what I can tell you, not sure about the pc, but can tell you the vpc I have here was clean installed, nothing but office on it. so probably that wasn't a stopper on it.

BTW, while I Have you - Is there a reason you don;t support current versions of quicktime (e.g 5 or 6 ) and are plans in the works for any MAC products in the near future? Vegas looks interesting, Sound forge doesn't do much for me outside looking at the chainer idea there ( I wish bias peak had something similar )
Thanks for helping.

Spheris, We have concluded our tests of updating our XP test machines to SP1 and cannot reproduce the problem. We have not tried any virtual PC setups so the problem could indeed be there.

Have you by any chance updated the Windows Media Player? The new media player (currently in beta)uses new WMA/V libraries and it might be replacing our files with newer versions. The file to look for is wmfplug2.dll and it should be version 1.0.0.67.

If you could reply with the exact error msgs that you are seing and the steps that lead you to the problem we might be able to track this one down.

Also, when you say "property tab for audio and video, no information for either audio or video tabs in the wma/wmv export" Do you mean that the fields are empty in the render to WMV/WMA dialogs?

As for the MAC comment; The # of users that would benefit from this would not be enough to justify the tremendous expenditure of our limited resources.

We do support QT if it is installed with the authoring components. You will then be able to read and write mov files.

Neither installation was updated, they were done from sp1 integrated cdroms. Clean installs with nothing but vegas loaded to test it again.

Both were reinstalled between the last post and this one. Both continue to suffer the same symptoms. The fields are empty yes and the export stops with an error of
0xc00d0bc2 (message missing). I've not a clue as to what it means. It might not show too much in an upgrade situation but the propensity for PC based people to reinstall could be a problem for you come monday. I hope not - but it looks that way from here.

I'll check back with you later today, but the problem is apparently consistent. might not be apparent from the upgrade but definitely is from a clean installation.
I wish you luck with it. I'm personally knocking on wood on this one for being final cut based. I just wish final cut supported wma. The conversion is a nightmare with the hopping around to use the microsoft encoder.

Well thanks for your help. We will indeed hear about this come Monday if it is an issue for the PC folks. I unfortunanetly do not have a CD with SP1. A word of caution about virtual PC setups: We do not test on these setups and they are very much use at your own risk.

Thank you again for the input and I hope we do find the bottom of this issue so that you can resume rendering to WMA/V formats.

Now THIS is a good, clean, tight and to the point thread. Nice.

Looks like it's happening already, for some others.

Ivan I appreciate you taking the time to respond here in the forum. Though, it appears they'll have to go back and test it and find the solution ( I don't believe they did test it in the proper sense, because its repeatable in several cases across a couple of machines. One of our competititors uses it too and we bounced back and forth on it this afternoon and duplicated it there as well)

Again I do wish you luck with it.
Apple had some similar problems with the 10.1 update - though they did fix it fairly quick. I chalk it up to growing pains in the industry, just don't let it drag on and sour too many people. The way it soured a lot of people with the OS-X camp.

For what it's worth "0xc00d0bc2" means "Codec not found". I've seen it on Win98SE boxes; upgrading to XP solved the problem. But you're seeing it on XP.

Spheris wrote on 9/6/2002, 9:35 AM
If codec is missing is the error code, and wma codec is installed by default.
I also reinstalled the codec from the sdk redist in the vegas package (I've spent too much time around the PC _ I'm starting to pick up that reinstalling thing you guys do ;)

then we're back to the original problem and probably the same analysis. the wma plugin handler isn't traversing path or routine.

Ivan, not necessarily trying to be a pest about it. But if it is showing up across the board. I feel you should have the feedback necessary to correct it.

It's not so much a matter of for what its worth - granted I can keep rolling on the MAC while our PC guy struggles with it. But I did kind of get him the job (he's young but really talented)

Any resolve on the error of 0xc00d0bc2 ? I'm seeing it on XP sp2 running Sound Forge 6.0a (build 150). Any ideas?

Forget it! Found the fix. I should have guessed it was a Microsoft problem. Here's the link: http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediatech40/Update/8.20.00.5059/W982KMeXP/EN-US/wmfdist2.exe

This link is now dead and nothing useful shows on MS (or Google) for this error, yet I have it. Sound Forge 6e gives this error whenever I choose Save As wma, though fine to MP3. I have XP sp1 and WMP 10 plus WMP 9 series encoder. Please help!

The above link works. I just cut and pasted it and downloaded the file.
