I wish Vegas didn't do this (issue with saving files).

Liam_Vegas wrote on 2/25/2004, 11:00 PM
Vegas chooses to save a veg (in the Save-As dialog) to the folder that was last accessed via any file-open dialog.

What this means is that if you do something like access a script (Tools-Scripting-Run Scripts) the place where your scripts are now becomes the default folder where vegs will be stored when you do a File-Save-As.

I don't think that is a very good idea! Unfortunately (maybe I should have learned by now) this has caught me out on a number of occasions. I end up spending a few precious moments trying to figure out what happened to the Veg I was working on that didn't end up where I thought it should go.

I would much prefer if the File-Save-As dialog stuck to the folder where you last saved a Veg (and this DOES NOT get overridden by just any dialog that you use to identify files for other purposes/ (like scripts)).

...I have submitted this as a feature request to Sony.

The problem is a bit more general than that, every thing goes to the last accessed directory by default I think.

I agree - vegas' saving and rendering location defaults are a pain in the arsenol.

hmmm .. thinking cap time here . .. Yeah LV, this has "wound" me up on more than occasion too .. .

How about something similar to the "Capture Folder" within VdCap? It gives us the option of several folders on separate drives. Yes, I realise it could mean that Windows could get its knickers in atwist .. but this is only detail .. .

Perhaps a Menu structure for the following:

1 - Save Project File Folder. . .. . . .. . .. .

2 - Save Print to New Track Folder: . . . ..

3 - Media EXTRACTION Folder/s: . . .. . . .. . . THis could be where you last got your Audio; Graphics; AVIs . .. . anything else ? ?

4 - Scanned image folder

.. okay. .. Howzabout an option to "Create" one's option tree .. YEAH! that's it . .

Anybody like?

Grazie

I don't think it's Vegas. I think it's using a Windows standared. I've noticed this with almost all windows programs, but especially when I use Vegas (or premiere at my old job) it frusterates me. It shouldn't be hard to fix though (a friend who wrote a program for someone had the same "problem" but added a couple variables to the code andallwas solved).

Yes, most commercial software i deal with behaves this same way. The only notable exception is Microsoft Word, which lets you specify a "files folder" and all new document saves will default to this folder no matter what other paths you've accessed in the mean time. It's a very nice feature!

Yes, it IT quite nice (I use openoffice.org though). But, I don't that that is for the ease of the user. I've noticed all office/wod program like programs have that "feature". Corel Wordperfect even makes its own "my files" folder (c:\my files). Just another folder to clutter up my root! :)

I have submitted a request to fix this to Sony already. I asked that it remember what folder you were in last for a couple major tasks (saving/opening vegies, rendering, adding media). Hopefully the next version will have something to help out with this.

Some programs I use will remember where a particular type of file was saved last. So if you are saving a VEG file, it would go to the last VEG file folder used, etc.

I find this a nuisance in Vegas as well.

Cakewalk Sonar also allows you to to define "Save to" and "load audio from" directories.
It also allows you to define a "master" directory for audio, or on a per project basis.

Having a similar (or the same) facility in Vegas would be very useful, and would avoid the frequent "where on earth did I just save that file?" scenario

This is already solved with Save VEG Wizard in Neon.

The tool allows you to specify two places to save your veg to simultaneously and completely bypasses the quirks of the Windows operating system.

Whenever you run the Wizard, either from the Neon interface or a separate key command, it saves a new version and appends to your project name, your choice of any combination of Year, Month, Day, Hour, Minute, Second and AM/PM.

Works like a charm :-)

Just to add to all the comments so far. I too have seen similar behaviour in other applications. However... my programming background is also responsible for my knowing... it does not have to be this way.

Also seems that others have experienced this "feature" and we are of a similar mind that it is a bit of a pain.

Let's hope something different is possible with the next version.

Hello? Tap. Tap. Is this thing on?

Gary, I read your message, but $50 to save a file is more than I can afford.

It can be "fixed." I write VB programs from time-to-time, and it's simply a matter of keeping track of folder locations for specific fuctions. If you don't specify the location for the Open dialog, it will indeed use the last known folder.

What I don't understand is why the pre-render folder keeps changing back to my C drive. Surely that shouldn't happen as it is a default option and nothing to do with where you last saved any files.

Did you check the box telling it to apply this to ALL new projects?

Yep.

I think we all heard.. and are grateful for the information... BUT... I personally think this should be fixed in the base product.
