Ideas for Vegas Audio 3!!!

SHTUNOT wrote on 11/25/2001, 12:33 AM
I was just on the cubase web site and saw a thread on pooling ideas for the next major upgrade. To be quite honest with you all I use cubase for all of my audio needs,so I don't have anything really to add on this topic...BUT...I know that there are many of you that have ideas that you'd like to have implemented so I'm posting this thread. My only bit of contribution would be that the research and development team should go to the site[www.cubase.net],check the forum page[cubase for windows] and COPY all 5 pages of ideas[and counting!]. There are some amazing shortcut ideas and such. I know that vegas audio is probably on its last legs of development but it can't hurt to throw in some last minute tweaks.
I really would like to stay in the whole sonic foundry family for "all" of my needs!!! [video/audio]...Thanks guys...Later.

For Vegas Audio 3:

Lock Markers to events!

I'll assume that the developers are fully aware of the needs and requests for things like:
track effects automation
Red Book (DAO) CD burning
etc.

I have heaps but one that save a lot of time would be to have another option for the way the space bar works.
While playing...
First hit - Stops at the spot (like hitting Enter)
Next hit (if no other action has happend) Return to Original start position. (if other action has happen) this become the new start position.
Next hit - begins to play again.

Here it is in a code format....

Sub SpaceKeyHit
if Playing = true then
Stop_Play_Leaving_Cursor_at_stopped_location
else CursorLocation = PlayStart then
Start_Playing
else
if Time_Line_Has_Changed = True then
PlayStart = CursorLocation
Start_Playing
else
CursorLocation = PlayStart
endif
endif
End Sub

Another Nicy would be...
To have a right click option over a video event, too in fowl swoup freeze the image
IE
Adds & Set velocity envelope to 0
Sets the Rescan (or what ever its called) Switch to ON

I use a lot off still from motion and this would cut down heaps of time.

I was just thinking that...
1. Having a maximize button of 3 stages in the trimmer...video...plugins...etc...windows.1-2-3,x-y-z, whatever. It would be much quicker to edit in the trimmer[maxed]edit audio/video...insert in timeline,click[resized...min],see timeline and added event in the track view...click to max track view...etc...Or maybe to add a "views template"[1-10*shift=20 different screen configurations{number pad right of keyboard}], as in soundforge.
2. Acid type interface to use loops in vegas...not just acid{like Sonar}...If your going to add stuff from CD Architect and piss them users off, then why not include Acid users! [ sort of like the little brother/big brother relationship of video factory/vegas video...acid/vegas audio{?}]
3. Soft Encode users as well!!!
4.If not acid like features then a button "in" acid to export audio right into a new vegas audio template...like the "open in soundforge button/short cut". That way I'll be able to work in acid finish my loops...export to vegas in one shot{It will render each loop as a individual[or mixed down 2 track] wav.,.PCA,w64,etc...keep on keeping on. Bypass the master output entirely and be able to add effects as if each individual track had its own output![right to an empty track in vegas] Creating a "Vegas Buss a,b,c,etc...kick,snare,high hat...that way output to vegas can be monitored. Or maybe just have the effects chain in one program carry over to the other so that the rendering time would be cut down.[?]
5. A "tape saturation modeler" would be nice too.
Speaking of Sonar I really hope that this is one hell of an upgrade. I just came over from their site and you will not believe the amount of added features...keeping my fingers crossed!

Any other takers.

But MOST importantly...And this function has been requested numerous times...IS:

AN ADVANCE TO NEXT EDIT/SPLICE POINT ON HIGHLIGHTED TRACK!!!

This to avoid endless zoom in-zoom out-navigate-zoom in-zoom out-navigate...

That one simple-to-implement shortcut would speed up editing on Vegas 10 fold!

And while you're at it...User definable zoom ratios mapped to hotkeys.

SF: ctrl+alt+ left (or right) arrow key- doesn't this do what you want?
CDM wrote on 11/27/2001, 12:38 PM
yes, ctrl-alt arrow left right on a hightlighted track (select the track header for this) jumps to the next edit point. I use this a lot!!
MixNut wrote on 11/28/2001, 12:49 AM
OK...I am going to SCREAM!!! I have complained about the lack of this feature over the last several months [to 1+ years] and have been told by *more than one* Sonic EPM, "that's a great idea! I'll take that to the next developers' meeting!?"

And now...You're telling me that this feature was THERE ALL ALONG!!!???

Here's the *kicker* question...Is this function available in v1.0b? Cuz that's what I'm still using...[and unfortunately can't test it right now...].

If not, then I feel wonderful about the fact that my suggestion was implemented in v2.0! If so...I feel useless, stupid, and PISSED! Where is this in the v1.0b user guide???!!!

Thanks...

SHTUNOT wrote on 11/28/2001, 1:04 AM
I remember reading it in the manual as a short cut...might have been for soundforge though and tried it out in vegas and it just worked.[?] Its cool that alot of the shortcut keys work the same in almost each program. I think that there is a slight variation though...could be wrong.
Time for an idea...How about parameter control for plugins or what have you with the mouse wheel. I know that it changes the viewing ratio but I don't think that it has a use for say changing the gain/presets, or whatever in a plugin.
SonyEPM wrote on 11/28/2001, 9:11 AM
Mixnut:
RE: ADVANCE TO NEXT EDIT/SPLICE POINT ON HIGHLIGHTED TRACK

This feature (ctrl+alt+L/R arrow) has been listed in the printed shortcuts list and the online help since at least the first rev of Vegas 2.0.

If it was your idea, it was a great idea.
MixNut wrote on 11/28/2001, 11:46 AM
Thanks EPM! I would have to believe it was my idea as much as I harped on it...;-) That functionality is present in both SADiE and Neve AudioFile trim windows, [which I use in my real job] so I guess we should really be thanking them.

I do feel better that this a v2.0 feature only...That means that I haven't been slowly editing in 1.0b all this time for no reason...

I'm holding out to upgrade to v3.0 Pro for monetary reasons...Are we there yet?

Thanks for implementing user suggestions!

SHTUNOT wrote on 11/29/2001, 3:14 AM
I was just mixing in cubase and of course the most glaring update that I could think of was the implementation of "VST" technology into all of the software...starting with vegas audio of course! I'm purchasing a "Universal Audio card" in a bit and can't see myself mixing with any application that doesn't support it...final.[www.uaudio.com][TC Powercore...www.tcworks.de] I'm really sick and tired of getting half way through a mix to have to go back and "group/buss" tracks down so that I can make a song sound right/tight/together/mixed/leveled/yadda yadda yadda...And at the rate that the computer world is going at[100MHZS/4months or so], I can't "wait" till I'm freakin' 40 to have it. I get along pretty good at this point with all the work arounds, but what I've heard about the quality of the compressors/eq/reverbs/etc...too good to be true. And it freakin' is! The closest...if not on par with protools type quality. Add 5.1[soft encode technology]audio mixing and avid will be crying. If anyone can comment on why it wasn't immediately implemented right off the bat I'd appreciate it.Thanks.

Please right in to product suggestions[or post right here] and demand VST compatibility!!!!!!!Later.

>User definable zoom ratios mapped to hotkeys

I'll take that also but the real feature we want would would be to be able to save Window Sets, etc. ala Logic and some other programs.
SHTUNOT wrote on 11/30/2001, 2:22 AM
Good point dude. I would like it if I was able to gang some of the faders together for pre buss mixing. I know...just set up a buss, route the channels badda bing badda boom easy level correction. I just would like it in a step less.
1. When i have a fader on track 19 at a volume of -9.8, how would I easily and quickly get the fader on track 20 to match up...say clicking on something/cut/paste on track 20's fader? I'm tired and confused.
This is in no way bugging me much...just a suggestion for debate. Any other takers! Later.
Rhythmystik wrote on 11/30/2001, 3:58 AM
Yikes, I almost forgot one of my biggest wishlist items for Vegas Audio 3:

Join events!

The obvious partner to Split Events. This has already implemented in Acid for quite some time. Doesn't seem like it should be that complex...

And yes, I know about Grouping but it's not the same.

Rhythmystik wrote on 11/30/2001, 4:04 AM
The thread on Moving Markers with Events made me think a bit more about it and one thing that would be very desirable would be to have Event Markers. That is, the option to have Markers within events as well as on the time line. Then you could have a true Lock Markers To Events that would make sense.

The other side of this for the Time Line markers would be to have an option to Ripple Events and Move Markers.
MixNut wrote on 11/30/2001, 9:24 AM
But the most powerful feature of all...One that is available in ProTools and SADiE...and one that makes infinite sense...

Event based automation envelopes! i.e. lock pan and volume envelopes to *events* instead of *time*.

SonyEPM wrote on 11/30/2001, 10:07 AM
lock pan and volume envelopes to *events* instead of *time*.

this already works
Bisquilis wrote on 12/1/2001, 9:13 AM
er.......MIDI!!!!!! Acid has it so we know SF can make it happen. Mono effects on tracks like Auto-tune, mic modeler, amp sims. Grouping faders would be great.
MixNut wrote on 12/2/2001, 11:32 PM
...works in what version? And, how does one define that lock?

Thanks!
SHTUNOT wrote on 12/3/2001, 1:35 AM
Idea...Envelope based "Busses/Groups". To be a very quick shortcut for either volume or panning...etc...Pick which tracks you want sent to a certain buss...buss "A" for example. A track opens up in the work area with either a pan/volume/effect line. Make your adjustments as you would normally with these; like in a audio track. Any change occuring in the buss track would then correlate to what you'd see in the fader buss of the same name. It would look like you applied automation to a track by the responses in the faders relating to the changes that took place in the timeline. Thus affecting the selected tracks more quickly and smoothly. You could also place values that represented more of a cylindrical or curved shape for more variety in the movement. Like when you right click in a fade out or crossfade area...you get more options than just gain being raised or lowered "linearly". This could be incorporated by ctrl+clicking between to points in say a volume line...It highlights that area and opens a template to choose from. From these choices you will have more mixing flexibility. This should be implemented into standard editing of audio track parameters[volume/panning]. Most helpfull with a "Master" envelope as well...Would make the fade outs of my songs perfect without having to bounce everything down first!
Idea 2...Sonic Foundrys very own proprietary "VST Wrapper" Like fxpansion, dxciter...etc. They did a slamming job on their own video codec didn't they? Common SoFo bring it on!

Any other takers?Later.

Options/Lock Envelopes to Events

It's in 2.0...dunno about earlier versions.

Hope this helps.

ACID Integration!

I currently have to render each loop track as one wav file, then throw each track into Vegas.

It would be great to just open an Acid file in Vegas and be done with it.
SHTUNOT wrote on 12/7/2001, 3:49 PM
If you check out the second post I made from the top I had suggested the very same thing. If the next upgrade had:
1.Midi
2.Acid integrated into Vegas [better than Sonar]
3.DX automation
4.DXi's
5.Hardware controller support
6.Proprietary VST Wrapper
7.Volume/pan envelopes for busses+master
8.Tape saturation modeler[like magneto/true tape]
9.more features from CDA
10.View select buttons[better screen management!!!]

and a plethora of ideas that were posted that I can't remember...I think that I would be in shock for about a day or two. With so many options in one integrated program, it'll take me that long to focus at the task at hand and rip into the program!

I just would like to be able to work from 2 different apps[Vegas/soundforge]. Than 4...VV/Cubase 5/SF5/ACID3.

Later. [Any other takers?!!]
