If you use a JVC deck in Vista 64...

please let me know what driver you are using and where you got it. I am pulling my hair out trying to get my SR-VS30 to work as a preview device in V8, Vista says it can't find a driver and after spending hours I can't find one anywhere...JVC says it's a MS issue(and they have no drivers).
Thanks very much,
Randy

I am on WinXP. but I happen to have the very deck you named. Recently had it given to me.

Some time ago I looked high and low about this issue (there are a lot of postings around concerning this deck and drivers) and the conclusion I reached is that the drivers do not exist. Some folks even called JVC and they were no help either.

I know the deck does run with no (additional) drivers. It is recognized on my OS as a video device, but it doesn't work quite like my camcorder does when used with Scenalyzer. It works for general purpose capture and printing to tape.

That was the conclusion I reached.

Hmmm...it worked perfectly for me running XP... I guess you mean XP 64?
Anyway I just learned from another forum (cow) a guy is using a JVC deck (different model) with these drivers : C:\windows\system 32\drivers\ksthink.sys.
These must be the generic drivers for these kinds of devices because when I plug in either of my cameras (Canon XL1S') it uses those drivers.
Can anyone tell me how to force windows to use them?
Thanks Kentwolf,
Randy

EDIT: actually C:\windows\system 32\drivers\ksthink.sys. should be C:\windows\system 32\drivers\ksthunk.sys.

I have both the VS30 and the DVRS3U (less expensive version) and they both work with V8C. I can capture with them, and the XP computer (32bit) can control them. What else are you trying to do with them? I run a Canopus ADVC110 to run an external monitor.

Some of the early cameras and VCRs did use a different driver than the generic firewire driver. Our old JVC 500 camera was one unit that was different and did not play well with other firewire devices on the same buss. I recall the DSR 30 VCR from Sony was the same. Sorry that doesn't help you with Vista 64 but it might explain why you've got a problem.

The only thing I use it for anymore is for an external monitor. I had no problem running V8 on my old 32 bit XP box....it is this new Vista 64 that can't find the drivers.

I bought this card (Pyro PCI 64R2) because it professes it is " 64 bit compliant" and it "provides complete compatibility with all the latest video editing applications...." (it even lists Vegas) and the deck is the only firewire I'm trying to use with it.
That said, here is what is so confusing to me: Over at the cow, I've been corresponding with Fredrick W Keyser, someone who is running a JVC deck with 8.1 also. I asked him what drivers are showing up for his deck and he said-

Under the windowssystem32drivers directory, the specific files showing for the DV deck are ksthunk.sys, and msdv.sys.

When I hook up either of my cameras (Canon XL1S') they work perfectly (even when using as an external monitor) and they use the drivers Fredrick mentioned above. It seems they are the generic drivers Vista 64 uses for these type devices...is there a way I can force Vista to use them?

Thanks everyone,
Randy
