ifo files

I have a sony dvd dcr-201 handycam. It produces IFO video files. I bought the Vegas Movie Studio+DVD software. The software does not recognize the camera and the software says it cannot open the slected file from the cameras mini disc with the IFO files on it because the file is unsupported (due to it being IFO). I am trying to take the IFO files and convert to avi or whatever else so that my family can view the video when I burn it to a cd. I am guessing I got the wrong software for this job! Who can help and point me in the right direction for the correct software to get? Thanks

You want to use the VOB files, not the IFO files. The VOB files contain the video.

If you got the Platinum version of Movie Studio 6 then use File / Import / DVD Camcorder disc to move the video file into Movie Studio for editing.

If you are planning on using the video from your camcorders' discs in any form other than simply playing the discs it produces, you would probably do better by getting a MiniDV camcorder instead of a DVD camcorder. The DVD format is really intended for you to only play the discs from the camcorder as-is, no other editing or transcribing involved.
