Ignore third party codecs

Just downloaded the 3.0 upgrade. I see under preferences where to check to 'ignore third party codecs' and have placed a check in the box.

However, I don't see a similar option under preferences for vidcap3.0.

When I capture video and right click on the resultant avi files to check properties, I find that my video was not captured using the SF codec. Further, if I use these avi's in a project and render them, even though I have the 'ignore' box checked, I get a newly rendered avi that uses a non-sf codec.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

New program looks delicious.

GG:
Thanks for the reply. I read something similar on another thread, so I took my little test project, added fades between each scene, rerendered (with 'ignore 3rd party codecs' checked), and, the resultant file still shows a third party compression codec when I right click on the avi file and click properties, open the summary tab, and, there it is, under compression scheme (or something like that).

The codec that shows is miroDV2. I'm thinking it should be SFDV or something, right? Certainly not miroDV2 which is a Pinnacle codec.

Thanks for your reply.

as long as you have "ignore 3rd party dv codec's " checked- you are using SF codec ...

from my experience .. sometimes when you install other software that has a Dv codec ( I.E. mainconcepts) somewhere in your registry they write a line so that anytime you have a dv clip it shows the clip as using mainconcepts dv codec ( as in my case) ..even after you un-install their software the line in registry is NOT erased - i have yet to find it but mainconcepts did tell me they do write a line in registry BUT they have NOT told me where to look for it - only said 'don't worry about it your software will use correct codec" they did give me the name of the codec dll.file to make sure it was deleted in the system 32 folder

on my win2K computer using VV 3 it will say the clips are DV (doesn't say what codec - the exact words ? as my VV3 beta is expired) ...HOWEVER the same clip in VV 2 says mainconcepts 2.0 codec- which was deleted long ago - un-installed etc...

When I got Vegas 2.0, I had the same problem. I went into Settings-Control Panel-Sounds & MultiMedia-Decices-Video Compression Codecs-Right click and select remove for all Pinnacle codecs. Any Pinnacle software will now use the MS DV codec.

When I navigate to the list of video codecs on my win2k machine, here is what is listed:

Cinepak
Indeo by Intel
Indeo video 5.10
MS MPEG4 v3
MS RLE
MS Video 1
msh261.drv
msh263.drv
msyuv.dll
Pinnacle PIM1 32-bit avi

Should I remove the Pinnacle codec? How about the others? Is the SF codec in this list? If not, is that because it is proprietary to VV30 and won't be used by other software?

Sorry for the questions, but I'm curious.

I have made some other test avi's, now, from win2k explorer, I get no listing whatsoever about the compression codec. If I navigate to the test avi from vv30's explorer window, I get the DV designation . . . no codec type mentioned. Guess I'm on the right track.

Thanks for the replies. By the way, the program seems to be working really well, although I've only played with test files and renderings. Capture works well, rendering seems to work fine, quality is good by my meager standards. Looks like my equipment and this VV version are going to get along well.

Thanks, SF.

First off, don't ever be sorry for a question. That's what this area is all about. 8-)
Yes, I would remove that Pinnacle codec. I don't remember what they were called on my system, but Studio DV does just fine without them. And Vegas is rock solid.

I ask the same question sometime back and SF said it will not display their, it is proprietary and can only be used by VV.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip.

A question before I remove the pinnacle codec.

I am currently working on a project that used the miro codec. If I remove the miro codec, is that going to make it so I cant access my clips?. Will the microsoft codec be used by default?

When you remove the codec, does it actually remove it from the hard drive, or just disable it?

Thanks

Not sure on the first question. Finish the project then nuke the bloody codec.
Don't know about question two either, just that it works.
