image quality problems during capture and in preview window

I've just purchased a new Compaq Presario 7110 desktop with a built in firewire card.

It came with Millenium, so I reformatted and partioned the drive and installed Win2000 Pro which obviously wiped out the original driver for my firewire card.

When I installed Windows 2000 along with the Service Pack 2 upgrade, it recognized my card as a Texas Instruments OHCI compliant 1394 host controller. Cool!

But when I went to import video, the image quality during capture seemed unusually low. I've used SF capture before on a friend's computer and I didn't remember having this type of problem.

I haven't done an output yet, but my question is this: Is it possible that the Win2000 driver isn't the "precise" driver for my card and this could be causing quality loss during capture?

My secondary question is this: If that is a potential problem, how do I find out the specific part number for my card when it's not listed in any of my documentation and the Compaq tech. support people can't even tell me?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

are you capturing from a DV camera over 1394? If so, that will be a straight data copy with zero degradation from the original tape

Maybe your preview monitor quality is correctly set ("preview" should be fine). If you have indeed captured DV, make sure the project uses the appropriate DV template.
