To do it well is not easy. Take your burning log. It's pretty easy using a number of techniques that you can do in Vegas to add it into a scene. Except when a log burns it creates light and that light illuminates the objects in the scene that you're compositing it into. Even harder to simulate, it's not a constant light.

The simplest to use tool in Vegas for compositing is probably the bezier curves. You can use them to cutout part of one video and then composite that into the video on a track below. There's some pretty decent examples in the manual.
