Import from DVD

sorrkid wrote on 3/26/2010, 3:43 PM
I use Sony VegasMovie Studio Version 6.0b. My church videos the Sunday service using a Sony Handycam which is connected to a DVD Recorder with a soundboard. I bring the DVD home and bascially pull the sermon off of it to put on the church website. I use the Import function and it always works well for me. The March 7th service was longer than usual with more singing as well. For some reason, I am not able to import. It doesn't give me an error. The import dialog box comes up and it acts like it is going to pull the files in but then it just closes - like it thinks it has already pulled the files in or can't fiind the files. Again, I don't get an error message at all. I have been trying too figure out how to import these files and cannot coome up with anything. Hopefully someone out there has an answer for me.

Have you tried making a copy of the DVD and then importing from that?
sorrkid wrote on 3/26/2010, 5:51 PM
Yes, I did make a copy of the DVD - it does the same thing.

John,

I already did a search on import and found nothing exactly like my problem. I did find something similar and tried that particular "fix" but it didn't work.

None of these three are exactly my problem. In all of these, they were able to import the files but they didn't have expected results. I am not able to import - it seems to think it has imported or something. It does not give me an error just closes the file import dialog box like it is done.

Vegas is pretty picky if there are disc write errors.

Use the trial version of VideoReDo Plus to import the DVD. Then run Quickstream Fix and the fixed file should open fine in Vegas.

sorrkid,

Hopefully the links above will shed some light on your issue. Meanwhile here's how I handle our worship recordings, they might help avoid the issue you had March 7:

I recently started recording our services but opted not to record to DVD, which I did for a previous church. Once someone actually BROKE the DVD in half after the service (accident by a known klutz) so all that recording was for nothing - and there had been a special kids program on it :(

When I started here, I originally used the DV out to capture via firewire through a computer to an external hard drive. At the same time I use the video out to go to an RF modulator and coax to the nursery TV. Works great, and a DVD recorder could be put into that same setup. At the end of the service I just copy the file onto my editing computer directly from the portable drive.

If you have a computer you could capture with, you wouldn't have the extra step of importing from DVD. My old Sony TRV20 supports output in both places @ the same time, see if yours does. I just added a cheap firewire card to a rinky dink computer, and the card came with free/simple capture software.

Unfortunately the TRV20 started acting unpredictable so I switched to a Sony SR1 which records on a hard drive and does not have DV out, but still can stream to the RF modulator. I just bring the camera home to move the file onto my computer. (copy/paste/done)

On another church recording note, I've been frustrated with audio quality so now record from the sound board & other mics to a Zoom H4n with 4 tracks (plus the shotgun on the camera). That way I'm able to use speaking mics for clear audio, yet still bring up the room mic tracks for laughter, amens, responsive readings, singing, etc. I hate watching when I say something funny but the sound board doesn't pick up the laughs - makes the comments seem like they fell flat!

I just raise and lower the audio tracks (6 of them total) in Vegas as needed. It doesn't take much time, and the end product is way easier to understand, especially for the older folks who I give DVD's to.

Hope this helps.

musicvid,

I downloaded the trial version of VideoReDo Plus but I find no place to "import". I did try open video and tried combining but got an error - then I tried join but it locked up and I had to "end task".

Not sure what to do from here.

asdrew,

Thanks for the info. My March 7th DVD is also a special "kids" service - it was the kickoff for Lutheran Schools Week and all the school kids "performed". They did such an excellent job. I don't actually do the recording but I can pass this information along to the two folks who do the recording.

I was wondering if the disc is "too full" so to speak and that is why I can't import the files. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I do know that it was a longer service that day. I don't normally have any problems with it except if the people recording had trouble with the DVD recorder. It has stopped a couple of times in the middle of the service and we miss recording some of it.

Thanks again for this information.

sorrkid, I know that some (most?) DVD recorders have two different record modes and I'm wondering if someone accidentally switched it to the other mode when they were having problems with it.

Mike,

They didn't have a problem on the day of this particular recording and it has the same .vob files that it usually does.

The recording is actually done on a DVD recorder not on the camera itself. And it did finalize.

Can you drag individual VOB files to the Vegas timeline?
See if you can use DVDShrink to extract the files.

rs170a,

I use version 6.0b of Vegas and cannot even see VOB files to pull them in that is why I have to import them from the DVD - which it won't do or thinks it has done.

DVDShrink allowed me to copy the files (compressed) to my hard drive but I still cannot pull them into Vegas because it is looking for them on CD/DVD. Maybe I just don't know how to use all of these softwares very well :-). It seems I am just getting more files in more places and I can't pull any of them into Vegas.

Thanks for the suggestion though and maybe you have some idea of what I can try next.

The last update for Vegas 6 was 6.0d so, if you do nothing else, grab that update as there were several improvements and bug fixes.
The reason you can't see VOB files is that you have to change the import to All Files(*.*) as VOB isn't in the default list.

When all else fails, play the DVD through a firewire capable device and capture the program. Render and burn. Doesn't solve the original problem but does give you the intended result right away. Then you can work on the problem at your leisure.

Funny! You can always use a previously recorded congrigational laugh track (;

Just reporting back in. I haven't been successful in getting the files off of the DVD yet. I have tried most of the suggestions that you have all generously shared with me. Remember that I am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio Release 6.0b. Someone suggested that there was a 6.0d upgrade but that is Sony Vegas - not Movie Studio. I am not finding an upgrade to Movie Studio. I did download Sony Vegas 6.0d but when i tried to run it, it wants a serial number.

I tried DVDShrink and it didn't accomplish what I needed.
I tried VideoReDe Plus and I couldn't find an import of any sort so I didn't get to try the Quickstream Fix portion of this software

Someone asked if I could pull the .VOB files into the timeline - I can but what does that accomplish? Is there something special I have to do with them to make them work? When I pull them into the timeline and play them, I just get a portion of that part of the video. I guess I just need to know if there is something special to do with them so that I get all of the video.

I only want portions of the video from the original DVD - the entire file is too large to put on the website so I have to be able to pull the files in and then select the parts I would like.

Thank you to all who have posted their suggestions. I am not an "expert" or even close, I just know enough to get the portion of the file off that I need. I certainly appreciate the expertise on this forum.

Have you tried testing with a trial of the most current version of your software. 6.0 is about 4 years old now. There are likely many improvements to file handling that have been added since:

Download trial here...

sorrkid, as Sab (Mike) mentioned earlier, in light of all the hassles you're running into, the easiest thing to do would be to get a miniDV camcorder that has a feature called pass-through.
That will allow you to plug a DVD player's analog outputs (audio + video) into the camcorder and then through firewire into Vegas.
This will capture the entire disc as a DV-AVI file and then edit as desired.

Mike,

I am not sure that I understand how exactly this works. I do have a Sony Handycam DRC-SR47 with a 60GB hard drive. Is it possible to record the DVD I am having trouble with to my Handycam? I looked through the instruction manual and am not finding anything about that - just how to record to DVD not from DVD.

I just thought if I could get it to my Handycam, I could pull it off of that.

My old Sony TRV20 would let me record from a VCR or DVD player (A/V in/out) to either the DV tape or pass-through to a PC, but I don't think your SR47 does; neither does my newer SR1.

What camera are the services recorded from? Many cameras let you record from and outside source so If you got your hands on one you could capture the image that way if all else fails.

Just thought I would let you know that I finally got the files off of the DVD. I was reading through the various forums here and found a problem not like mine but someone suggested downloading some freeware - Any Video Converter. I did that and converted the VOB files to MPG, then pulled it into Sony Vegas Movie Studio. It is great and it is all there. I can now pull off what I want and get it on the church website.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

Yay!
I'm sure some parents are pleased that now they can tell family to watch the kids on the website!
