Import .mp4 (Base Media)

ElkHunter wrote on 1/2/2014, 9:27 PM
Trying to import an .mp4 file to the timeline and receive the following message: "An error occurred while opening one or more files. The file could not be opened ... "

I'm a first time user and new to all of this so it's probably something basic that I'm missing, but frustrating to say the least as I expected this to be a lot easier.

Oh, I'm using Vegas Studio 10 and have Quicktime 7.7.4 (1680.86)

Using MediaInfo here are the details of the file:

Welcome to the forum, EH.

This thread looks similar to your issue:

Rolling QT back to 7.6.2 will most likely resolve your issue.

Depending on your system specs, you could try downloading a trial version of Movie Studio version 12 to get by.

First time user? Did you inherit v10? It's several years old.

Thanks for the suggestion MSmart. I've downloaded QT v7.6, but still same error. URGH.

Yep, first time user... I purchased v10 with our computer a few years back and never installed it, been procrastinating and a little scared to dive into the video projects I have at home. Trying to convert 20yrs of VHS and 8mm tape, oh joy!

Instead of using v10 starting off, would it be more beneficial to jump to v12? Would v12 solve my issue of not opening a .mp4 file?? I'm totally lost on what to try next. Ok, I've download v12 (trial version), still using QT 7.6 and getting the same error when trying to open an .mp4 file. HELP. please?

Oh, and it looks like someone else has the exact same issue as I do, using Elgato etc. I've posted my info of the file I'm using from Mediainfo above

Really appreciate the time everyone takes to respond and help people out. Thanks again and look forward to getting this project off the ground.

Best thing to do is upload an original file that you cannot open somewhere (not Youtube!) and see if we can duplicate your issue.

Here's a bit more info... I'm using Elgato video capture. I can play the .mp4 in Windows Media Player just fine (audio and video). I downloaded RealPlayer and tried the same thing. To my surprise, ONLY the audio is coming through, a green screen shows as my video.

I take it I must be doing something wrong when transferring the video via Elgato... but why does it work with some players showing video and audio, but not RealPlayer and Vegas Movie Studio.

HELP, I don't want to give up but I'm lost.

"HELP, I don't want to give up but I'm lost. "

And that uploaded clip is ................... where?

What would be the best way to get you the file, it's about 3.5mb so something I could email.

I could upload it as well, just don't know where to do that at.

Thanks again for the help.

Dropbox, Google Drive, Mediafire, etc. etc.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply. I've setup a dropbox account and added the file.

In Handbrake:
Open your mp4 video
Select "Universal" preset
Select "Web Optimized"
In audio, use only a single track "AAC Passthru"
Start

It will now open in Vegas
That is a strange codec you've got.
Elgato may have broken it on purpose.

You can tell Handbrake to use .mp4 extension.
.m4v is just Apple's name for .mp4
