Imported AVI displays as black

I am trying to edit an AVI file with vegas. When I view the file with any of my media players, it works fine. When i try to preview the file in Vegas, or when I drop it in to the timeline, the video does not display. I do not have this problem with other avi files, nor with any other media type. What am I doing wrong?

What "type" of AVI is it then? Where did you get it from? For example, I can no longer preview my SteadyHand AVIs, ouot to my External Monitor they are "black" too!

If you have Vegas 5 or 4 see if they are seen there?

Grazie

I've had this happen (in another editing app) and found the answer in the bit depth setting for the display. Apparently 16 bit setting is not used with any degree of consistency. Try 24 or 32 bit settings. Good luck.

Sadly I do not have any prior versions of Vegas. As far as i know, this file was rendered from a BetaSP to avi for editing purposes. I have previously received the same file from the same source, but that particular file was full of deinterlacing artifacts. I requested a new render from the client and received the current file- which appears in my media player to be free of the aforementioned artifacts but just won't display in vegas. Thanks for the thought, and i'll keep pokin around : )

Thanks for the thought, I'll double-check the bit depth settings

You're going to see "interlacing" artifacts when viewing the file in Media Player. This is perfectly normal, computer monitors are progressive and TV's are interlaced. The fact is that there is probably nothing wrong with your original file. How does it look when viewed on an actual TV?
