Imported .mpg files audio out of sync with video

I have been capturing some VHS tapes to my PC using my TV Capture card and tuner software.

The captured file is an .mpg and when I play it on my PC the video and sound are in sync.

However, when I import the .mpg files into Vegas 12 the audio is not in sync with the video when I preview it. It is also not in sync when I produce it.

I have experimented with the same settings on both my my pc and laptop.

I am running the latest build of Sony Vegas 12.

Any ideas?

Doh! I figured it out.

I thought my tv capture card was set to capture in highest quality, but I had it on a lower setting.

Switching to the highest setting solves everything in the preview and produced videos.

Upon further testing, this is not due to the settings in the TV capture card. I went back to my old computer and set-up and captured some video.

The video captured on my old system is in sync when you watch the file in a media player, but imported into sony vegas studio 12 is out of sync.

Upon further investigation I noticed that the audio track runs 16 frames past the end of the video track in SVS 12. If I duplicate the audio track, mute the original audio track, and then slide the duplicated audio track so it ends at the same time as the video track, everything is in sync.

Any ideas on what is causing this syncing problem?

Q:
"Any ideas on what is causing this syncing problem?"

A:
"The TV capture card."

These don't necessarily work that well, and it is probably capturing a Transport Stream (MPEG-TS), which would explain the differences between a player and a decoder (Vegas editor).

Try remuxing to MPEG-PS (Program Stream) in AviDemux (free), or use the Quickstream Fix utility in VideoRedo Plus (free trial) to fix your indexing issues.

There are better ways to capture VHS to digital than a capture card (were you using a Dazzle?):
-- Set top DVD Recorder
-- Canopus ADVC device
-- Canon miniDV camcorder with A->D passthrough
