Imported video is displayed at half height.

Hey forum peeps.

I've got a problem with Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0d. My imported videos are being displayed at half height (squashed) in the time line and the preview window.

pic here:

The video is shown normally (full height and not squashed) when played in at least 4 media players i've tried. The video was captured with a Blackmagic Intensity Pro capture card. I downloaded a trial version of Vegas 9 and i didnt have this problem. (version 8 is cheaper and 9 for me is not worth the upgrade).

Hope you can help. ^^

Edit: changed the above pic to a larger clear one.

Make sure you don't have weird settings/icons ON on your preview window, and also make sure the aspect ratio and project properties are filled up properly.

I reinstalled the trial of Vegas 9.0 and its working fine...

I didn't really want to spend almost twice as much on version 9 (i'm never usually tight, typical *rolls eyes*) for stuff that would be no benefit for me :[

I've un-installed and re-installed version 8 and still no joy.

If nobody can help me within the next few days, i'm going to send it back to Amazon. If they take it back, i'll get version 9.

What settings were used when you captured the Xbox video? What flavor avi? Divx?

If you're not sure, use a program like GSpot.

The project properties resolution should match the video.

In VMS8 your frame rate is 29.970p Preview is Full and your Display 716x403, in VMS9 is 25p Preview is in Auto. Your settings might be wrong, check your snapshots and try to match'em and see, if that solves your problem.

Two new pics:

http://www.rpgash.me.uk/images/vegas9-2.jpg

I was under the impression (i'm a n00b btw when it comes to Vegas), that the preview window size (e.g. Display 716x403) and quality (e.g. Best>Full, or Draft>Auto) had no baring on the finished video? In other words it didnt matter what those setting were set to, the final video would be based on the project settings? Either way, both the above two images have the same preview/display settings.

The good new: You were right about the frame rate though, Vegas 8 was at 29.9p and Vegas 9 was at 25p.
The bad news: I changed the project settings (snapshots?) so they both matched (Vegas 9's settings) and the video was still squashed by half height.

Also, if you look at both the above images, the same video (capture_25.avi) has the same size and date, but have different codec's. In Vegas 8, its 'Sony Motion JPEG' but in Vegas 9, its 'Blackmagic 8 bit MJPEG' (it was captured with the blackmagic). Do you think this will have anything to do with my problem? I've check and unchecked both 'Ignore third party DV codecs' and 'Use Microsoft codecs' in the Options>Prefences menu, but either the video part of the file does not load (only the audio) or no change takes place.

I've got 24 days left on my Vegas 9 Trial anyway.

Just to clarify:

1) You must set the project settings the same as the original media properties to get it to display correctly in the Vegas preview. You do this by clicking the folder icon at the top-right corner of the project properties box. The preview display aspect is entirely dependent on this, and nothing else, except the "Simulate device aspect ratio" option in the preview properties. You access the preview properties by right-clicking on the preview screen; however, I don't think this will affect you because if I remember MJPEG is 1:1 only.

2) The final video is not dependent on either the project settings or the preview settings. Not at all. It is only dependent on the render settings, and nothing else. To state this same thing in a different way, the render settings always override the project settings.

3) MJPEG codecs are weird. Depending on how it was captured, it may display differently with different Decompressors. If the facts in 1) and 2) above don't help, you are welcome to upload a sample somewhere or post the file details using the media properties in Vegas (right click on the event and click "Properties) or with a third-party utility such as MediaInfo.

Problem solved!

Thanks for the info though. I'm still learning as i haven't had it long.

Although i can't pinpoint a solution to my fix, i can say it *was* a codec. I installed a codec pack called 'K-lite codec pack' (lots of codecs in a collection) @ http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm and Vegas 8 now displays the video normally! Also it now says 'Blackmagic 8 bit MJPEG' in Vegas 8 which is correct.

Thanks peeps!
