importing DVDs

OK I thought this would be basic, but I'm stumped so far

How do I load a non-copyrighted DVD onto my computer for editing in Vegas? I figured there'd be an extraction tool, like extracting audio from CDs. If I use Windows Explorer to drag the contents to my hard drive, they are files Vegas won't recognize.

This is not a data disc, but just a regular NTSC-type DVD-R of my band recorded at a festival, on (I assume) a stand-alone DVD recorder.

I have used this function a lot in Vegas.
Beware that you can get into trouble depending on the bitrate of the DVD and maybe other factors, but for me most of the time it has been perfect.

Yesterday a guy brought me a Canon camera disc to make copies. I don't have the camera. The disc copied fine, but just for the heck of it I tried importing it into Vegas. I used the import function but the only files listed are video ts files and they won't copy into Vegas. I haven't really needed this function, but some day soon I probably will. Any other suggestions. I'm going to try to play it on a standalone unit and use capture to try to get it in.

The import function can take a long time. The dialog box eventually goes away, then there is a long pause where you think nothing is going on. Eventually the files appear in the Project Media tab.

I haven't tried this but I have read of others doing it. I hope I remember correctly. Copy with concatination all the VOB files from your DVD to your hard drive using the DOS COPY command and give the destination file an MPG extension. Then load the MPG file into Vegas.

e.g.
COPY file1.VOB+file2.VOB+file3.VOB dest_file.MPG

I used the import function but the only files listed are video ts files and they won't copy into Vegas.

VIDEO_TS isn't a file, it's a folder containing files such as *.VOB, *.IFO and *.BUP that are necessary for proper DVD playback.
When you do the File-Import-DVD Camcorder disc option, you browse to this folder and then click OK.
As fldave said, it may take a long time before you actually see anything happen so be patient as Vegas will eventually convert them for you.

If the Import Camcorder function doesn't work (and it often doesn't), you can use the techniques I described here:

VOB edit using DGIndex

Later in that thread, I posted a very crude YouTube tutorial on how this technique actually works:

VideoRedo Plus will fix all the GOPs and quick copy your DVD into a single MPEG-2 that is completely Vegas-friendly. Works on anything except encrypted DVDs. Works beautifully with DVD-RAM as well. Automatically cuts commercials from TV shows.

There is a generous 45 day full function trial, and now that I've purchased it, I use it more often than any other MPEG-2 editor I own.
