Importing GoPro video footage

Hi, I'd like to start importing GoPro video footage - MP4's - direct into Vegas Studio Platinum. I currently run version 9b on a Windows XP PC but it doesn't seem to be able to cope without converting to AVI first. The MP4's that I've created are about 3GB in size and it gives me an error when I try to import them.
Is there any way that I can import directly without converting or do I need to upgrade.
If I do need an upgrade, which version of Studio will I need to upgrade to to enable me to import GoPro footage directly?

You will almost certainly need a new version of Platinum and a newer PC to run these files.

GoPro offers a free Cineform codec that "may" help, but without a much faster cpu, it's still going to be a problem.
