Importing M2TS

I am having some problems importing M2TS files into Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0.
I have just reinstalled my Windows 7 64bit machine. Before the reinstall I could not import the files but I read somewhere that may have been to do with previously haveing had the demo installed. After reinstalling though I find I still can't which leads me to believe I'm missing something.

Using the Built-In Explorer selecting a M2TS file freezes Vegas for a few seconds, it then releases but does nothing, I drag to the timeline, freezes again then releases and does nothing.

Dragging and Dropping from Windows explorer causes the same behaviour, a freeze release but nothing appears in the timeline.

Import Media, I select a file which causes a freeze then I can click open, the dialog closes, another freeze and then finally an error saying: "Warning and error occurred while opening one or more files". I am then prompted to "Make Sure the file exists"

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Install the trial of Platinum 11, it installs in parallel to version 10. Load it. Using Windows Explorer navigate to the connected camera, and find the folder where the huge .mts files live (make sure you are on the right folder, where the files have big filesizes). Create a folder on your C:\Videos\ or something, copy the .mts files in there, and then from that new folder, pick just 5-10 of these files and drag and drop them to Vegas 11. Tell us what happens when you do that.

Thank you for your help. I have done as you have asked and tried this. It gave me the exact same results. Some more information though I Can import them into Roxio Videowave with no trouble at all and realtime edit them. This is however a crude tool by comparison and I would prefer to use Vegas. The smallest file is 1.7GB and was sourced from the PS3's PlayTv application. I was using it to edit down a news article about Uncle for archiving so it seems odd the Vegas can't import a file generated from Sony's software. I have tried several other recordings from PlayTv for comparison and none of them work in Vegas either (though they do in Roxio)

See if converting to mpeg-2 PS in AviDemux makes it work in Vegas.
Otherwise, upload a short original .m2ts clip to MediaFire or Dropbox and we'll take a look at it. A google may lead you to more information.

By performing this conversion I end up with a file which seems to work fine with Vegas. There is a slight drop in video BitRate but the conversion is fast at least. This would seem to work as a work around so thank you very much (great tool Avidemux btw) still at a bit of a loss as to why native PS3 files are not supported by Vegas but at least I have a way to make them work now with only a short conversion time.

UPDATE: I just for a laugh converted it using Avidemux tinto and MPEG-TS File (the same as it was) and cryptically that output I could read perfectly in Vegas. Makes me wonder if there is something about the PlayTV file that Vegas simply can't handle?
