importing .mov files in HD 11.0

Hi
I have used Vegas Movie Studio HD 11.0 to edit my .mov files from my Kodak Zi8 camera without a problem. Now I have a Logitech C920 webcam and shot some 720 video which is saved as .mov files.
When I try to import them, I only get the audio, no video. They play fine with my quicktime player. I have a Sony laptop running Vista 32bit.
I have updated Vegas to the build 75.
I really don't want to convert the files and I don't understand why the Kodak files work but the Logitech do not even though they are both .mov.
Any ideas for a fix? Thanks

Can't answer your question directly as I know too little regarding these two types of cameras. That said, however, one should realise that the .mov format is only a container. For example, my Canon 7D movie files show up in Explorer as being .mov files although what is contained within are .H264.
The best advice that I can offer you is to download (if not already installed of course) a small application called Media Info available from here http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net. Open your ORIGINAL source footage in Media Info and then copy/paste the resultant data here. Those that know how better to interpret this said info will then be in a better position to further advise.

Okay I will get the info and post it.

The forum won't let me cut and paste. What part of the data do you need?

Strange, everyone appears to manage it. Give it another go and if still no luck place it on a free hosting site like, for example, photobucket and then post a link to it here. Oh yes, all of the info please.

Salute - I had this same general problem with video files from a Canon IS20 SX camera that recorded in the .mov format. I encode to a MPEG 2 with the AVC conversion software. It can encode to other formats as well.

Am surprised you could do a direct import of any .MOV file.

Take care,
Bill

Just my 0.02 US: Also you could update your quicktime which again updates the codec used for importing such files - the newest version is around 7.72.80.56 - and if you have an older version it might be well worth trying that update.

I was able to paste but when I click "post message", it says Sony has blocked the post.
I did convert the files to h.264 mpeg4 and they now import but I would like to avoid the extra step. I will see about posting a link. Thanks for the help!

ritsmer -I did upgrade quicktime but it still didn't work.
Thanks

Sorry - just an idea.

No worries.
I emailed Sony and heard back today. First they suggested using the media software and updating the codec. I told him that I did that to no avail and then he said the file type is not supported and I need to convert the files. Oh well, at least I can do that and still use the webcam. Maybe in a future update they will fix it.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Sorry you are having troubles copying and pasting information into the forum. Having a post "blocked by Sony" is a behavior I have not heard of before.

If you would upload a sample of your original Logitech footage somewhere and post a link here, there may be a simpler, lossless solution called "remuxing". Would need the sample footage to test however.

There are some bugs in Movie Studio with .MOV files. I'm running Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 on Windows 7. My .mov files are from an iPhone 4, so we're not talking about some rare format. If I load around 20 or 30 .mov files, MS shows several weird behaviors. It'll show the clips as having no audio. Or often it will show them as having audio but no video. Sometimes the audio for all clips (including the avchd files) will disappear. And sometimes the whole editor will permanently hang. (Looks like a memory-scribbling bug, like mismanagement of memory or a buffer overflow.) Note that smaller numbers of .mov files cause no trouble. I don't know whether the problem is related to the number of files or to the cumulative size.

The workaround for me is to take about 15 .mov files at a time, re-render them into a single avchd file, and then edit that in the original project, chopping up the big .avchd into multiple events. Yes, I could re-render all the .mov clips individually, but my approach seemed like (marginally) less work.
