importing MPEG-2 media

I'm new to Vegas 5 but have read the manuals. Have a job editing DV camera rushes delivered to me on DVD. Captured to harddrive using Roxio. But when import to Vegas 5 (using Sony MPEG-2 Professional plugin) only the video comes across. No audio track and no sound. Material plays from harddisk using player10. What am I doing wrong? I've tried everything that seems relevant.

convert the ac3 audio to wav files .. do a search here, been covered lots of times

Thanks B_JM. I see that it has indeed been covered extensively and I'm reading and reading. Working through all that before I do anything else.
