Importing Mpegs crashes system

pete_h wrote on 7/18/2003, 5:51 PM
All of a sudden, every time I try to import an mpeg file my system crashes. I have tried to import from the "media pool" and the "explorer tab" and each time, the same result, (CRASH)

I had been using this program for about 7 months with NO PROBLEMS, and now CRASH

I can import an AVI or JPEG just fine, and even "write" that file back to a mpeg (mpeg1 or mpeg2) with no problems , but if I then try to import that mpeg or any other mpeg, then CRASH

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, re-registering, and still the same results.....CRASH

The error message before the crash, says something about "page faults..."

I even went as far to uninstall, and then deleted all registry entries to SF, and re-installed, re-registered ect. and again.... the same problems with the mpegs importing.

Any ideas .......

I am not an expert on this but it acts like the mpeg you are trying to import is corrupted. Try to run scandisk and then defrag the drive maybe that would help. Hope it does!

Which operating system are you running?

98se
500mg AMD
316 meg ram

All background programs turned off

By process of elimination let's see if it's an os issue. As suggested run scandisc and defrag in safemode, then check system files for errors: RUN/ type sfc and replace any files you think are corrupt from os disc. Also, a reinstall of os (with no loss of data but b/up in case).

Scandisk & Defrag ran OK

SFC reports quite a few changes. Some I believe are the DirectX 8.0 update, others I'm not sure about. How do I determine which ones to correct ?

If I reinstall the operating system, will I loose all the Microsoft Updates ? (like DX 8.0)

Any help would be appreciated.

If you reinstall os you do have to update again. Why not upgrade to DX 9 and see if that cures it? If not write down the files which have changed/corrupted (that's the only thing with sfc that you have to eliminate which files are changed and which have become corrupt), and post back. Or if you're b/band reinstall os and update in minutes.

OK, I think I've narrowed in on the problem:

Uninstalled VF, VV4, and DVDA.....deleted all files remaining, .... and deleted all regisiter entries

I perform a clean boot

Now I reinstall VF, register, ect. and the mpg files import just fine....

Next I install the VV4.0 and DVDA Demo Download, and run VF and I start having the same problem with the "error message: ....mcmegdec.dll ..... encountered an error ( or something like that)"

Any clues....

Pete,
Install VV4.0 and the DVDA Demo one at a time. Install VV4 and then try encoding a video. If that works (it should) then install the DVDA demo and encode a file. I suspect it's that program causing some sort of a conflict. Also be sure to reboot after installing each program.

I had problems with VF after I installed the VV demo. The fix was to reregister all the dlls:-

In Explorer, find the folder Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins
A directory at a time, find all the .dlls below this level and drag them into a VF window
Answer "Yes" when asked if you want the dll registered (you're asked for each one). Some of them will give an error because they're not self registering, but this seems to be harmless.

If you set Explorer to view details and arrange the files by type you can drag and drop all the dlls in a directory in one go. Good luck!
