Importing PAL into Movie Studio

Hi,

I'm interested in importing PAL DV content into Movie Studio.
My co-worker sends me DVDs with content shot on PAL from the UK.
The segments are about 1 gb each and he uses Pinnacle to get them to that size.
The final output will now be WMV (from QT/ .mov) for the Net and also
Mpeg2 for the newly edited DVDs.
Is this a straightforward task with Movie Studio?

I use Sorenson Squeeze 4 which I find works well for the net.
I may have to find something better for Mpeg2.

I will be returning to Windows. I last used 98... My new XP computer should be arriving very soon.
I would like to make sure that I am able to do PAL with Movie Studio.
Movie Studio has very good reviews, better than most. Stability is important as there is a lot of content.
The editing is very simple without much glitzy effects, etc. Very basic stuff...
I'm in the US.
Your thoughts or ideas are appreciated.
Thanks,
Al

I don't know what the limitations are in Movie Studio compared to Vegas but from memory most of the core features are there, just that there's a limitation on the number of tracks and you don't get teh 3rd party stuff that's included with Vegas.
If that's the case then you can drag the PAL DV footage into a PAL project no problem. I'd suggest setting the Deinterlace Method to Blend and turning on Reduce Interlace Flicker in the media properties. Then render out as vanilla NTSC DV and treat as normal.
Alternatively you can use event cropping to crop the frame size to the NTSC frame thus avoiding the resampling and need for Reduce Interlace Flicker.
Resulting quality either way is very good, you'd need to spend quite a bit of money to get it any better. Only issue I've seen is slight blurring on motion due to lack of motion compensation during deinterlacing, you've got to look hard to notice it.
Bob.

Thanks Bob,

The core features are very impressive, many of which are way over my head...
I can't wait until my computer arrives and I download the software.
It will be refreshing to work with a new OS as well. (I hope).

Event cropping? may be the most direct route.
I will try both your recommendations.

There is very little movement, mostly panning so blurring shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks again,

Al
