Importing Photoshop files

Hello, I was told that it is best to create your Photoshop files at 720x580 resolution, then resize to 720x480, and THEN to import to your program (whether it is a DVD-authoring application or an NLE, like Vegas Video 3.0)

When I import it into Vegas, it seems like distorted (stretched vertically) and then when I *DE*-select the "Maintain Aspect Ratio", it looks perfect. Is this correct what I'm doing or am I just a dumbhead? :)

Thanx
AB

Are you in PAL land? I'm guessing that from the 720x580 size (which i believe should really be 720x576). I would skip the resize step. Then you shouldn't have to muck about with the aspect ratio setting either. If you're in NTSC land then use 654x480.

It's actually 720x540. Computer monitors use square pixels, DV uses rectangular pixels. First create your graphic in a 4:3 aspect ratio, either 720x540 for NTSC or 768x576 for PAL, then as the last step, resize it to 720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL. Depending on how you have Vegas set, it may look odd on the computer monitor, but it will look correct when viewed on a TV.

Actually, I do all my graphics at twice the 720x540 size (i.e. 1440x1080) and when I scale it down to 720x480, it looks quite good.

Hmmmm....

SoFo recommends NTSC images to be 655x480, unless your graphics app can set the PAR to .9091.

SO if yer in photoshop, in NTSC (I think asafb is in NYC), 655x480 is good unless you want to pan & scan (then you want larger images).

(There are a number of threads on still images here to refer to.)
