Importing Stills

I apologise if this question has asked before (meaning: he knows it has, he just can't remember where...)

If I wanted to import still images captured with my Canon G2 and include them on the Vegas timeline, what would be the recommended target size. I assume that:

a) Resizing is necessary, since the originals may be as much as 2272 x 1704
b) Resizing is better carried out in say, Photoshop, than Vegas

I'm using PAL, but if my memory serves me right, the most desirable size is NOT 720x576. I think it was SonicEPM who gave the original advice.

Many thanks

It's been my experience that you do not need to resize an image before importing into Video 3. (as a matter of fact, if you plan to do any zooming, you shouldn't). If your picture does not have the proper aspect ratio than you only need to use the "match output aspect" command to properly crop the image.

Thanks (both of you) for your guidance.

I have just tested placing two examples of the same still shot side by side on the timeline. The first instance was left at its original size, the second was first reduced in Photoshop to the recommended size.
The second (smaller) image is much better. It is smoother and minus the artefacts visible on the full-size example.

It seems then, that Photoshop is better at this task. And that's something that I would expect, too.

Kind regards

Make sure the video preview is set to "best" quality if you're scaling images down. Also, the "full size rendering quality" setting in project properties should be "Best" as well. You should see scaling nearly as good as photoshop then.

Ah... well I didn't do that.
The settings I used were 'default'. I'll try again :)

1. On the computer monitor, before the render.
2. On a TV

It seems though, from the above notes from SonicDennis, that I wasn't giving Vegas a fair crack of the whip and hamstrung it with the wrong settings :(
I'm investigating.
