Importing .SWF

[r]Evolution wrote on 9/27/2006, 4:15 PM
I just received a .SWF....
Tried to import it into V7a...
All I get is RED Frames.

The video event is the correct length... but there is No Video or Audio.
Only RED.

I remember importing a .SWF into V6 for a project and I thought it was still part of the deal with V7.

--Are there certain settings for our .SWF's that we have to adhere to for V7a?

I have flash mx 2004 professional and just tried to drop a swf file on the timeline- no go- unsupported. Although, I have swishmax and there are no issues there.

Flash 4 compatible, ie; no sprites, etc.

It is in the manual and other places but the flash support is fairly basic. Flash version should be 5 I think (maybe 6) and no Action Script. I regularly make quick text animations in After Effects and export them as swf files and drop them right on the Vegas timeline. Basically I do it with no background (transparent) so when the swfs are brought into Vegas they can be dropped right on top of things without having to do anything. Some people use Swish and other shareware apps to generate quick animations (text or otherwise) and make them into swf files for import to Vegas.

SwishMax is working fine with me.

So I need to publish...
FLASH -targeting Flash Player 4 with no Action Scripting?
SwishMax -targeting Flash Player 4 with no Sprites?

That sucks. It's been years since I've heard of anyone publishing anything targeting Flash v4.

It's kind of hard to regulate when you're given things from a client. 9 times out of 10 they will NOT be targeting Flash v4 and they WILL have ActionScript. I am still yet to see anyone in my circle using SwishMax. At the least... Flash v7 should be importable.

(Flash MX2004 targets Flash Player v7.)

Well the thing is that you're importing animation into an NLE. It's basically looking for a movie. Why should Vegas understand actionscript? I can kind of see aefx understanding something more complex, but Vegas?.

If your clients are publishing swf files that would just play as footage then they ought to be able to publish as flash 4. On the other hand, if they're generating graphics in code then that's a problem.

Can't Flash ouput avi or quicktime files as well? I'm away from my system with flash on it but I thought that was an option.

If/When we have control over the output we usually tell them to export a Quicktime. The cool thing is Quicktime will play it as a .MOV the same way a .SWF will in your browser. Complete with ActionScript, Links, and all.

When we don't have control over the Flash output and people come to us with 'Elements' they want in a Video... we never know what we're gonna get. If they have a cool animation on their website that they'd also like to be a part of their video... they bring in SWF's or whatever else they have.

Also, FLASH is a BadAss animation tool. A lot of people in Multimedia use it. That's what creates all these 'Talking Head' pieces that are popping up all over your websites when you browse the internet.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea... but it's my Bread & Butter. I love to see the tools I like to use communicate with one another. Makes my day(s) go a lot smoother.

I'm not saying that I want Vegas to understand ActionScript. I would just like it to be able to take in the Video & Audio so I can Manipulate it. Especially since FLASH 8 uses the On2VP6 codec. Man, is it clean! A lot cleaner than any other FLASH codec to date.

ps...
I also wish VEGAS could export FLV's.

it's just meant to do really simple things. AKA 32-bit animated GIF support is all.
