Importing Video

I'm sure this is covered somewhere in the 9,000+ posts in this particular forum, but I can't seem to find a layman's explanation as to why I cannot open or import any video files in Vegas Movie Studio 8. I have tried to import and open quicktime, swf & avi files. On the AVI, only the audio ends up in a track. Is there something I'm missing? I swear I've used this (and earlier versions) program successfully in the past. Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated and I sincerely apologize if this is redundant.

This Tutorial will get you started down the road to answering all of your questions.

Once you are able to provide the necessary information about the specific files you are trying to open in Vegas, the success rate is high. As an example, there are more flavors of AVI than at Baskin-Robbins.

I'll check the link to the tut. Thanks for posting it. In the meantime, I just wanted to say that I took an Movie & an AVI file (flavor unknown) and opened them in Quicktime Pro, then exported to AVI (default whatever QT settings are) and voila! The audio & video were able to be placed in their respective tracks. Thanks again for the lead!

OK . . . so, specifically, I was trying to open an AVI file. However, I don't know what kind of .avi it is. It was created using a point & shoot (Samsung, I believe, but it is currently unavailable to verify) camera. When you say there are "more flavors...", how would one determine the actual information regarding that file? I mean, I know I can right click on the file, choose properties and see a brief description (bit rate, frame size, length, etc...), but not any codec or any other detailed info. As a side note, I d/l'd gspot and it does show some more info than the simple properties does. When (if) in the future I find more difficulties, I'll return. In the meantime, a simple way for me to circumvent this problem was to use Quicktime Pro and export the .avi back to an .avi or .mov. Kirk

You said you downloaded Gspot. That gives you all the information you need.

True that.

OK . . . so I've been trying to play the content in the video folder for Sony Movie Studio 8.0. The .avi files won't play in any media player or Sony MS. Here is the info that GSpot gives. Apparently a codec by the name of iv50 is needed and I cannot locate it anywhere.
Stream Type and AV Interleave: OpenDML AVI
Codec: iv50
Name: Indeo Interactive
Comments/Metadata:
Codec : Junk
Name : ASCII in junk chunk
Content : VirtualDub 14328

Codec : Junk
Name : ASCII in junk chunk
Content : release

I hope this info is enough to allow you to figure something out. Thanks, Kirk

That is an outdated codec that hasn't been around for a while.

The Indeo legacy codecs are probably still available somewhere, but I have no idea if they will work on newer systems. I remember one time I had to do something similar on a Win98 machine and ended up having to install the Win95 version of quartz.dll to get it to work.

If you are able to upload a sample somewhere I'll try a couple of things. What OS are you on?

Vista Home Premium. I can get you a sample. Give me a few.

Unfortunately, Indeo 4 codecs are not compatible with Vista or Win7.

Your best bet is to install the Ligos Indeo codec pack ($15) on an XP box and convert the files to something Vegas understands.

There "may" be some hacked codecs out there, but you would be completely on your own.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help this time around. In ten years of using Vegas I've only heard of anyone trying to open Indeo 4 once before.

Thanks for your assistance. You know . . . it's probably not worth it. But, I just upgraded to Sony MS 8 not too long ago, I figured that everything was current. Well, I just saw the upgrade to version 9 on Amazon for $69 ($20 cheaper than the Sony site). So, I'll ask my missus to get it for me for Christmas.
