Improving Usability

My current HW setup is thus;

AMD 1700+XP
256 DDR RAM
ABIT KR7A
20 & 60 MB HD (7200)

Rendering is pretty good but i am wondering would I really see much benefit from increasing the RAM to 512MB?

I was thinking that, maybe, I could take better advantage of Dynamic RAM previewing.

Also, would I see much increase in the speed of rendering.

Any advice before spending more cash would be appreciated.

Cheers

open task manager and look at your Available Physical Memory. I have 785MB total and right now there is 500MB free. watch this meter while you work. if it dips below 64MB, you should probably spring for the extra RAM. if not, then it will do you no good.

theoretically you could utilize as much RAM as you can put in your system for Dynamic RAM, but it is kind of difficult to really see a benefit.

I would feel more comfortable with 512MB, but like you say, no need to waste funds.

AFAIK Rendering is more CPU intesive than RAM. You already have a decent size CPU, so any benefits of a faster CPU would be minute. Dual CPUs would be a bigger benefit enabling you to render one project in the background while editing another.

Even after a reset and just running VV3 the task manager reports (once my project is loaded) that only about 48M is available in a 256MB machine! This is with W2000.

So I think I'll go out and treat myself to 2 x 256MB (Cheaper than one 512MB) card.

Thanks.
