In future updates, could you...

Could you set default wav storage directory somewhere besides the VEGAS folder.
When i was having problems with vegas, and was trying different versions to find problems, I lost some very important "dubs" that got into the vegas directory without me catching it.

Then when i would load new version of vegas, that directory got overwritten and i lost the files. Cost me a few hundred bucks...I know it's my own fault, but if the default storage was somewhere else, it would be more idiot proof.

Maybe My Documents folder?
Since we are all in Windows...that would make sense.

Or maybe Vegas could seek out the biggest free space drive and make a folder there?

If I'm way off base, or missing something with the reason for storage in the vegas directory, i'm sure you will all let me know.
thanks!
Pete

What seems odd about that is that reinstalling Vegas usually doesn't delete any files in the directory. Any files you created (or had Vegas save) in that directory shouldn't have been deleted by the reinstall. Of course, if you deleted the directory before reinstalling then they would have been deleted too. But you didn't mention doing that.

I did do that...unfortunately. I actually had at one point reformatted the C drive to make sure all "oddball" drivers that got into my system were gone.

My bad...

Well it's good to know that typically the vegas files are saved...didn't know that. thanks.

by the way...i went to the Cheinworks website the other day, a monster site, you are into all kinds of stuff. Very interesting.

And by the way...why would deleting and reloading vegas cause all my saved VEG files from earlier sessions "forget" where to save wav files?
shouldn't that saved info stay in the veg file itself?

Ummm, the .veg files remember where all the files in that project's media pool are stored. They do not contain information about where to save new files. That is determined by the preferences in Vegas.

Don't you think is would be nice if, after setting up a path for wav storage for a particular song, Vegas would always drop new over dubs into that same folder? I think that would be great.

I just did a vocal dub session...dubbing vocals on 6 different songs. Vegas dumped all the dubs into the same preferences directory which i have rerouted onto a wav drive. However, when I pulled the songs up the next day to mix, 3 of the songs had the "wrong" vocals on them. They got mixed up somehow, probably due to the titling of the vocal dub track. Yet another session I have to pay to fix.

I know this must be something I'm doing wrong, I just wish things were a bit more idiot proof.

This is set up on a per project basis in File > Properties > Audio. Unless you disabled it you should also be prompted when you click the Track Record button.
