In & Out Points doesn't change the project duration

I'm creating a simple project, one menu, one sub menu & chapters. I'm using one MPEG-2 media file 2 hours long. I set the in & out point to half the project to produce a 1 hour render or DVD. When I go to prepare DVD the media duration in is the entire 2 hour project and does not seem to represent the duration specified by the In & out points. What am I missing?

here's a guess....

it keeps the entire mpeg2 file and simply plays from your in to your outpoint. One might, for example, play a different portion from another menue object. It doesn't attempt to delete the sections of the file not playable from teh dvda project.

Here's what the manual states: "You can set in & out points if you don't want to burn your entire video file to DVD, it will trim the video to include onlt that portion between these points."

Then a note that says the original file is not affected by the in & out.

well, that sounds like the in and out points are supposed to cause a smaller file...sorry my guess wasn't correct. you'll have to wait for some of the more experienced people to post an answer.

I've discovered that if your source media is AVI or you are changing the compression on a source media such and an MPEG-2 then DVDA registers the in & out points and will author a file to the in & out point project duration. If you use an MPEG-2 file that requires no compression DVDA does not register the in & out points and authors the entire project regardless of the in & out point settings.

Good catch.

That being said...you can force a recompression on the MPEG-2 file by clicking the Optimize button then checking the recompress box.

kameronj,

This is true but then the DVDA message report states that the MPEG will be recompressed. I want to avoid recompression.

I'm importing a 2 hour MPEG-2. I want to author the two hour into two 1-hour best quality by utilizing the in & out points. I have my choice render two MPEG's in Vegas or render once and use the in & out in DVDA to author two.
