Inconsistent rendering speed?

Hi. Been using Vegas 7 for about three years, and recent upgrade to 9.

I typically edit SD from a Sony Camcorder. I typically create either 720x480 WMVs for Youtube or mpg2 for DVDs.

One problem I noticed with Vega 7 seems to still exist with 9.

I can render a 5 minute video in 10-15 minutes after I start Vegas. My Q6600 quad core system will reach 75% or so cpu during the render. If I render again Vegas will only drive the system to 25% busy and of course the render takes much longer.

Why does this happen? What can I do for rendering to perform similarly each time?

9?

you're ahead of the game here. unless it's a typo, or vms.

OK - you're right. Vegas Movie Studio 9....

don't know about vms 9....

i've never rendered the same t/l twice. once rendered i keep the 'dvd' on hd. so i can't say i've noticed any difference.

My guess is that you're doing an MPEG-2 render the first time followed by a WMV.
On my quad core, MPEG-2 renders are considerably faster.

Nothing at all. WMV renders are much slower than most other formats.

I have almost always rendered WMV. I can render the same video twice with no changes and the first one drives the cpu @ 75%. The repeat render is about 25% cpu. Of course the second one takes about three times as long.

If I close VMS 9 after the first, then start it again - I get the faster render. It is much faster in most cases to do this of course.

It seems as if VMS 9 makes a choice the second time that it is constrained for some reason.
