Sure. Just use the Volume audio plug-in. You can layer several on top of one another, moving the slider to maximum on each, on the same event to increase that clip's volume.

As an alternative, you can try right-clicking on the event and selecting the Switches/Normalize option.

Also, don't forget to always judge your video's audio level using the program's audio meters! Never trust what you hear out of your computer speakers.

Thanks for the reply.
I tried the Normalise, and playing it within Vegas it appeared to do the trick.
I then tried to render the file. The mp4 is about 1 3/4 hours long. I started the render, but after 5 1/2 hours, with 15 1/2 hours to go, I cancelled it.
Is this length of time for the rendering normal ? Is there any way that I can speed it up ?
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300
Core speed 2Ghz
6 Gb DDR2 RAM
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
