Insert paste and close gap

Hi folks, I want to move a section of video to another place in the timeline. I select the section, and select cut. I go to the new place I want to paste the section but there is a gap where I cut. WIll the auto ripple prevent this? I am leery of editing any movie because the edits add up and you can't get out properly, even with UNDO (maybe that's just me!) THanks much!

This is exactly what auto-ripple is for.

Note that you can set auto-ripple to affect all tracks, or only one single track. Choose wisely, though i suspect all tracks is probably what is desired in most circumstances.

Do make sure the result is what you want immediately after the cut & paste, as you should be able to successfully undo at that point.

You might also want to consider saving the project before you do any particularly complex or troublesome edit, so that you still have a safe copy of the file from before the edit was done.

And use Save As to create version numbers of your projects. That way you can go back to an earlier version if needed. It's how I do all my projects.

Very helpful for me too - I was trying to find out how to delete a caption from the text track without affecting the timeline position of later captions. Auto ripple also fixed this for me, after spending ages in the help pages!
