insert writeable DVD

I've seen other messages onthis topic but the solutions don't seem to apply. I have an NEC DVD+RW ND2100AD that came with a Dell computer. I'm trying to burn a DVD. The prep indicates no errors. When I hit BURN I get this mess "please insert a writeable DVD." I'm using a DVD-R. I also tried a DVD+R.

Now here's the deal. I have an identical system at home and it has worked fine. I checked the hardward and it indicates that it is working.

Any ideas?

List those solutions so that we don't duplicate them here. :)

Here's one. I went to look for the list and coudn't find it. But my system at home as the same burner in it and it works fine. NEC DVD+RW ND2100AD.

Is your burner on the tested list?

Are you by chance formatting your blank media? DVD-A expects a fresh from the package blank disk that has had no formatting at all.

I noticed that the media says 4x DVD-R (Maxell) and the rate on the burner says 8X. Would that have an impact? THe package says that there might be problems with 1x or 2x Pioneer manufactured drives. MIne is not Pioneer.

I just tried something else. I tried to burn a data DVD with Roxio 5 and it gave me an error saying I didn't have the right media. It's a DVD-R right off the spindle. So even though the hardware says it's working there may be something going on there.
