Inserting an edit

This seems so basic, I'm almost ashamed to ask -- but I'm not finding it in the manuals.

How do I insert a clip into an existing timeline?

When I drag a clip from my media pool to a spot between two clips on the timeline, it always ends up overlaying a portion of another clip.

I want to drop it in and then see everything else nudged to the right.

Thanks.

You have to have Ripple Edit on - Just tried it in my version of VF 2.0c - IT DOESN'T work!! - It does in V4 - ooer????

I don't know . . .

The proper (although not extremely easy) way to do this in VideoFactory is to place the cursor at the insertion point on the timeline, then Insert / Time, using a length of time at least as long as the clip you want to insert. This will create an empty gap in the timeline. Drop the new clip into this gap. If there's extra space left over, double-click in the empty space and press the Delete key to close up the gap.

Just a thought, under options snap to frame disable?

One way to do a ripple insert in VideoFactory is the following:

1. Make sure ripple edit is on
2. Make sure the video track you want to insert to is highlighted
3. Position the video cursor at the insert point
4. Right click on your media and select Open in Trimmer
5. In the trimmer press the ‘A’ key or the Add Media from Timeline Cursor button

Your clip will be inserted and the clips to the right will be moved right for the duration of the inserted clip.

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, Johnny, but this sounds like exactly the answer I was looking for!

Thanks!

Glad I could help. One thing to watch out for is that only the one video track will be moved. If you have titles on the overlay video track, they will NOT be moved. Of course, the reverse is also true; if you insert on the overlay video track the main video track will not be moved either. (you may, or may not, want this behavior).

If you want to move all tracks, you need to insert time as Chienworks had suggested.

Or another way is to select all events/clips on track to the right of desired insertion point (by left-clicking/holding down Ctrl on 1st of each clip in each track, then right-clicking and selecting events to end) - this will select all clips in all tracks - shunting them to the right, then placing insertion point where new clip should go, double-clicking clip in mediapool (or click and drag), then shunting them all back.
