Inserting Audio with a microphone

Call me naive, but in my old video editing software (Video Explosion which I think got taken off of the market because of a legal conflict with Vegas- they are almost identical), I could simply insert voice over by plugging in my $19.95 microphone into my pink jack in the back of my computer, hit record and talk and it would record onto the track.
However, I can tell the sound is being picked up because the track meter moves, but it is not saving it or importing it. Any ideas?

Sounds like you have Armed the Track for Record if you can see the track meter moving.

To start recording, you need to click the red record button below the timeline.

You didn't mention the version of Vegas, but if you have an audio track and you have a level meter on that track indicating sound level, that means you're hit the red bullseye on that track, arming it for recording.

The next step is to hit a similar red bullseye under the timeline, probably in the left-center part of the Vegas window. This will start the timeline bug moving. When you hit the Stop button (the square button) then I think Vegas defaults to asking you what you want to name the clip. You can change this behavior and also where Vegas will store the clip in Preferences.

Thank you. Thank you. I knew it was something stupid I was missing. I kept on hitting the red button on the left instead of the one underneath.
