Inserting Clips at Start of Project?

Spectralis wrote on 3/3/2015, 3:57 PM
I've recently finished a project in Vegas Pro 13 (Win8.1) and now need to insert a title at the beginning of the project for a particular event where a lot of different projects are going to be shown on a loop.

How do I move all the events in my project so I can add a title at the beginning? Is it as simple as using CTRL A to select all the clips and then moving them all at once? Will all the keyframing and transitions move correctly as well?

I'm aware of some new tools in VP13 but not sure if they're relevant in this case.

I haven't used Ctrl+A for many years. But yes, you could.

1 of the 3 options below I use:

1] Auto Ripple - "All Tracks . . . . "

or

2] When Ive got to this stage I would render a completed Project OUT to a DI

or

3] Import the project into a NEW Project as a Nested Media Event

Ctrl A will work. lt effectively makes a group of the whole project so it can be moved. Auto Ripple "all events" will also work for you to do an insert at the beginning - or really at any point in the project. BUT ... Make sure if you do use CTRL A that Auto Ripple is ON and that "All tracks" is selected as the AutoRipple mode. This will assure that all "envelope points" and track motion "keyframes" will move with the group. Keyframes within an event like Pan Crop or other animations will always stay with the event regardless. IF you do move a group of events -- or do an insert -- with Auto Ripple OFF -- things can be messy.

Learning when to turn Auto Ripple ON -- when to turn it OFF is a key skill in Vegas. You also must learn when to use the various modes of Auto Ripple. "All Events" is not always what you might want.

Backing up your project frequently is always recommended -- especially when making a change like this.

Ok, thanks, that's really helpful. I just need the basic author/title at the beginning so I might try nesting as this wouldn't change the original project at all. I save very frequently and regularly save new versions of the project as I go along.

It would be good it Vegas could transcode parts of a project such as the title without transcoding the rest so I could join the title to a render from the original project without the original render having to be transcoded again. The original took about 1hr to render so a feature like this would save a lot of time.

One thing that no one seems to have mentioned is to ensure you have your keyframes locked to events. That's really going to make a big difference if you're using volume envelopes on your audio tracks.

I make sure all tracks are selected, put my cursor at the beginning, then select "insert" then "time"

Instead of fiddling with auto-ripple, which can be dangerous if left on, I always do it manually:

1. Drag the very first event to the right by the desired amount.
2. Ctrl Shift F will move everything else to match.

Caveats include make sure that no events are locked, and as Bob mentioned above, make sure Options/ Lock Envelopes to Events is checked.

If you don't use auto-ripple your "markers" will not move with your event positions?

Edit: I tried it with Ctrl-Shift-F and was surprised that it does move markers with events. What a great feature.

That's what I love about Vegas or any great software -- there are so many ways to accomplish the task at hand.

I've learned to love Auto Ripple. But I also respect Auto Ripple. That's true love.

Unless I'm missing something, isn't it as simple as moving the play head to the beginning of the project and inserting whatever time you need from the insert menu?

Insert/Time

Thanks for the smorgasbord of options! I've learnt a lot about features I never knew existed or never tried before but will in future.
