install can't find plugs

Randy Brown wrote on 5/14/2012, 10:00 AM
Top of the morning to you my friends,
I just built a new dedicated A/V system (Vegas and Sonar X1).
When opening an partially finished .veg I get an error stating Sonitus EQ could not be found. This is my go to EQ in X1 and Vegas and need it...X1 shows that it's installed, can someone tell me how I can show Vegas where it is?
Thanks very much,
Randy

The path to it may have changed, VST folder name possibly. Try Options> Preferences> VST Effects. Search for it in an alternate folder.
I hear ya Randy, my 'old' DX Sonitus Ultrafunk EQ is usually my go-to plug for EQ.

Well I think that's it rraud Vegas just can't find it.
That is in C;Prog files/Cakewalk/shared plugins when I showed that folder to Vegas it saw 3 other plugs;guitar rig, perfect space (reverb) and vc-64 but none of the Sonitus fx.....it is looking for the .dll file isn't it?
Thanks very much, I really appreciate your efforts bud!

I believe those plugins are DX and not VST. DX are registered with the system and discovered through the registry. VSTs are located in the file folder system and the host then determines whether the dll is a VST or not.

So, if they are registered correctly, Vegas will just find them as the system tells Vegas about them.

Then I have to ask why Sonar X1 can find them?
Thanks very much,
Randy

I don't know why sonar can find them. Since these are cakewalk plugins, have you contacted cakewalk to see why their plugins are not showing up in Vegas?

Are you running Vegas 32 or 64 bit? Are these plugins 32 or 64 bit?

Do these plugins show up in Vegas' plugin manager? If so, can you add them to a project?

Is the problem limited to projects created before you rebuilt your system?

Did you install a new version of sonar or the same version that was installed prior to the rebuild of your system?

I will ask our qa group to look at this, but I suggest you submit a tech support request through our proper channels here so a ticket is opened against it.

No because I just can't see how this could be a CW issue...the plugs are there and working well in Sonar with the default installation

all 64 bit

Do these plugins show up in Vegas' plugin manager? If so, can you add them to a project?
No sir they don't

Is the problem limited to projects created before you rebuilt your system?
No sir, if I create a new project there are only two 3rd party plugs that show up in plugin manager

Did you install a new version of sonar or the same version that was installed prior to the rebuild of your system?
same

thanks I'll do that...so is there no way to show Vegas where it is or does it just automatically scan the whole system?

If these plugins are DX, then there is no way to point to and scan for them as that is not how DX Plugins work.

Does cakewalk document any technical information about these plugins? I googled this and found a number of threads related to issues with the eq and sonarX1.

I would contact cakewalk tech support as they can probably answer these questions easier than we can. Note this may take some time as we will have to obtain a license of Sonar in order to get these plugins.

I reviewed cakewalks support area and it appears these plugins are available as both DX and VST. From CW documentation, you have to install the DX specifically or correctly point third party apps to where sonar installs the VSTs versions. Sonar creates a specific directory for their VST plugins, and they document this on their site and I would assume their documentation.

Do not tell Vegas to scan your entire c:\ drive or even cakewalks install directory as this will cause Vegas to look at every possible dll to determine if it is a VST. This can cause a hang as this would be a very large search.

Again, I refer you to Cakewalks support and knowledge base to obtain the correct install path for their VST plugins.

With all due respect I've turned this over to support.
Thank you for your efforts,

Well Peter and anyone else interested it turns out to be just bonehead user error...I had installed the 32 bit version (build 737 instead of 738) and so of course it didn't find the 64 bit plug-ins.
Thanks,
Randy
