Install new codec for VV3

spidey2002 wrote on 9/4/2002, 9:11 PM
I want to use huffyuv in vv3. I have it already installed in my system and one of the codecs in vdub which I use for my capping. However, these avi files won't work in vv3 but they all work using powerdvd, wmp, premiere, etc. What shall I do to make it as one of the codecs in vv3 or what shall I do so that vv will support this codec? Thank you.

Spidey,

Interesting!
I never really had to use VDub for capturing, since I pass everything thru my DV cam and use VV capture utility. There must be some imcompatibility with VV and VDub's capture, or your huffyuv settings....or perhaps the audio encoding.
I have many huffyuv encoded files rendered from vdub, and VV handles them just fine. VV can also render to Huffyuv.
Maybe you can run some tests. Bring in one of your captures BACK into VDub, and have it do a full process render with and without audio using the huff codec, then see if VV will accept it.

Thnx.Oh I love salad but anyway thnx again for your reply. I use vdub to capture off my satellite, vhs, dvd movies and dv cam. By the way, how many mbs or gigs does a one minute of video take when you cap using vv cap utility? And FYI, I tried capping uncompressed using vdub and it works in vv.

DV captures take about 225MB/minute. Uncompressed .AVI depends on various parameters such as frame size, frame rate, color depth, etc. 640x480x24bit 29.97fps will need about 1.2GB/minute.

Spidey,
For what it's worth, I just successfully captured some video and audio using an analog device and Virtual Dub (ver. 1.4.10 bld. 13870) and using Huffyuv. Audio compression was PCM, and I used the default settings on the huff codec.
The captured file imported very nicely into VV3.0c

I just didn't want you to think that VV had no support for Huffyuv. Not that I'm recommending using this as a capture codec.........but........

have fun :-)

Hey
in the porperties box for huf, where you set the quality, check the box for suggest rgb & everything should be cool.

Thank you all you guys for your replies. I'll try one of your experiments.

Checked RGB output in huffyuv and it is now working. In my opinion, this the best codec out there. I also tried MJPEG but huffyuv is better. Thnx again.

Of course it looks better, HUFFYUV is a "lossless" codec, whereas virtually every other codec is "lossy," this includes MJPEG and DV.

Glad to hear you got it working!
Good tip mikkie!

Now you can email the author of Huffyuv and let him know about the RGB fix. The message below the option states he wants to know the name of the application in which it provides a fix for.
Hope he's heard of Vegas Video.....hahaha(let's not go THERE :-)
