installing new video card/Hd

these are posts (in dated order) of my troubles about installing a new agp video card and a new 160gig HD...they are from another forum, but so far i need more help, can anyone here help?! haha.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

alright. now i'm really going crazy.

i put in my video card just a bit ago (i'm having to type this on a different computer). I can't, for the love of god, install any drivers without it crashing and going to the infamous blue screen of death.

It's an ATI Radeon 9200 64MB AGP video card. It replaced an NVIDIA card.

The CD won't fininsh installing, windows can't install it itself, the online version of "catalyst" (new ATI driver software) won't even finish unpacking without it saying that it is corrupted!
anyone got any ideas?!?!?!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i cant even turn on my computer now.

i mean, i can, but man

after trying to install the drivers for all that:
safe mode starting up = freezes as it starts to come up.
normal start up = XP goes to an automatic CHKDSK thing, cuz it says my drive C is now messed up,and it freezes at 34 percent. what the hell. i cant even start the piece of shit!!! i gotta get that running, i record on it! for the love of god help me! liam!??! haha...but i'm very serious.

can i just put back my old one in there and pray to god that it starts normally again? ha. and after that, how can i get my ATI installed?!?!

and now the HD woes...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got a 160gig HD to add to my comp.

Drive C = 60 gig (came with the comp, never touched it, has all system files on it, etc.)
Drive F = the one that I am replacing. it used to be a 40 gig drive. i just put in the 160.

When I put in the 160gig drive, it says it can't read from disk please insert system disk, or whatever. And I go to bios and look at the boot order, and IDE drive is just rediculous combination of numbers/letters or NONE (it doesnt list either drive as being there, just that rediculous combination)!

the cord is in right, it's the only way it will go in!!

Must I update bios? (I have heard i need to do this for new large size drives). In addition, I have no idea how to update bios it seems to compliocated...ha.

any ideas?

please help asap! haha.

if it was me & i was in your boat i'd just re-format & start all over. :)

But, if the AGP card is 8x you MB might not support it properly (for non Intel chipsets you need to install AGP drivers too), and you could have a bad spot on your HD.

Could be a bad drive too. What's your computer?

I have had issues with ATI drivers before.

Assuming you downloaded the driver directly from ATI, when they say to uninstall the existing driver before installing the new one, they're not kidding. (WIndows XP Update ones from MS do not seem to require the uininstall.)

Uninstall the driver & Hardware Profile listed hardware, reboot to VGA mode, cancel XP's attempt to install a new driver, then install the new one.

With respect to the drive, I would check your motherboard's site for what actualy was addressed in the BIOS update. If you don't need it, I wouldn't update it.

well CHKDSK seemed to have fixed my HD...now i'm still working on the video card.

it seems now that anytime XP trys to install my drivers, the error is always "access is denied." WHAT!? I AM the only user, and the administrator. so that is rediculous.

I downloaded the newest drivers from ATI's website, and it says that I should first try to install generic VGA drivers before it will let me continue the installation. this is just rediculous!!!

any ideas?!~?!?

First, only upgrade 1 thing at a time. Unplug the HDD until you get the video done successfully otherwise you get a mess happening.
Check your bios to select the agp as your boot video device.
Follow ati's directions to install the drivers.
Then it is a good idea to label your drives and partitions so you can recognize them in the list more easily "programs" "video" etc.
Then see how it goes.

You may also need to update your AGP GART drivers as well as your BIOS... especially if your motherboard uses a non-intel chipset.
