Installing V4 kills WMV 8 codec (temporarily)

When I first ran Vegas 4 I got a system error about an "invalid entry point into wmvcore.dll", but Vegas ran okay anyway. Later I ran Windows Media player (ver 8) to play a WMV file and the player complained that I didn't have an appropriate codec on my system to play ver 8 encoded video streams. The player downloaded and installed the codec on it's own and proceeded to play the video without issue. Now when I run V4 there is no error.

Maybe the installer for V4 is hosing the WMV codec on my system somehow?

Running Win XP pro, SP 1. BTW - I did download and run the MS patch to get the WMV export working in VV3 months ago.

I run xp pro sp1 but have upgraded most of my stuff to wm9 so I can't say for sure, but I had a few problems with winmedia until I rebooted the system. Didn't find anything in the way of changed files that would make a difference after install, so if something breaks, it's probably in the registry.

Scanning the drive, did detect the profile file (prx) for wm9 in winxp's folder was reported as changed, but this was a false warning -- only says maybe the VV4 install does mess with this stuff.

On the plus side, can open wm9 files in both VV3 & VV4, though how much good this will do remains to be seen, & still no import of rm9 files.

Off topic somewhat, but 1 feature in winmedia9 is the ability to edit the file, and only the changed video gets recompressed, just like we're used to with avi files. Tried this out in the MS Moviemaker 2, and it IS nice. Wouldn't it be great to be able to do that in VV4?
